DeFi Returns with New Force: $10 Billion DEX Boom Drives TVL Past $83 Billion
DeFi is surging back, with a $10 billion boom in DEX trading volume pushing the Total Value Locked (TVL) in its protocols above $83 billion, data from August 20 shows. The daily DEX volume broke the $10 billion mark for the first time since early June, indicating renewed trader activity. The rally coincides with a broader crypto market upturn, providing the volatility needed for momentum and leveraged trades.
Uniswap remains the volume leader on spot DEXs, while Solana leads in blockchain activity, followed by BNB Smart Chain, Ethereum, and Base. This signals DeFi trading is no longer Ethereum-centric. Meanwhile, Hyperliquid dominates the decentralized perpetual futures market, capturing roughly 45% of the volume. Its HYPE token price has risen in tandem.
While significant, the sector's TVL remains well below its 2021 peak of $180 billion. The key test will be sustainability—observers are watching to see if the elevated DEX volumes and TVL growth can be maintained beyond a single day's spike.
