CryptoQuant divides large Ethereum holders into three tiers. Wallets with 100,000 ETH or more appear in pink. Wallets holding 10,000 to 100,000 ETH show in light blue. Wallets with 1,000 to 10,000 ETH appear in purple.

Each colored band tracks the share of coins in unrealized profit. When bands sit above zero, most holdings remain in the profit zone. When they fall toward or below zero, more coins trade at a price below their cost basis.

As of early 2026, all three cohorts have been hovering near or below the zero line. The pink band for the largest holders has contracted sharply. The mid-tier blue and purple bands have followed the same direction. On the chart’s right axis, ETH trades between $1,800 and $2,000. That level stands far below the peaks near $4,000 seen in 2021 and again in 2024.

The last time whale unrealized losses reached similar levels was in 2022. ETH fell from above $4,000 to under $1,000 after the Luna collapse and the FTX implosion. Bands remained near or below zero for an extended stretch before price recovery lifted them again.

On March 12, the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions against six individuals and two entities involved in a North Korean-led IT worker fraud network. The announcement claimed that these individuals systematically defrauded U.S. companies to fund weapons of mass destruction programs, with the amount involved approaching $800 million in 2024 alone.

Sanctions Details

According to OFAC, North Korean-controlled IT teams used forged documents, identity theft, and fabricated personas to conceal their true identities and gain employment with legitimate companies in the U.S. and other countries. The North Korean government seized the vast majority of these overseas IT workers' salaries, obtaining hundreds of millions of dollars to support its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs. In some cases, North Korean affiliates also secretly implanted malware into corporate networks to steal proprietary and sensitive information.

 This round of sanctions targets six individuals (Nguyen Quang Viet, Do Pyong Kyong, Hoang Van Nguyen, Yun Song Guk, Hoang Minh Quang, and York Louis Celestino Herrera) who were identified as providing substantial assistance to North Korean IT workers in cryptocurrency exchange, money laundering, bank account opening, and IT business integration. Two company entities (Amnokgang and Quangvietdnbg) were identified as key operators and facilitators in a fraud network perpetrated by IT workers.

According to data from on-chain analytics firm Santiment, there are currently a record number of Bitcoin investors holding over 100 tokens. The indicator cited by Santiment is the “Supply Distribution,” which tells us about the total amount of addresses that currently belong to a given wallet group.

Addresses are divided into these cohorts based on the number of coins that they are carrying in their balance. The 1 to 10 coins group, for example, includes all investors owning between 1 and 10 BTC. Now, here is the chart for the Bitcoin Supply Distribution shared by Santiment that shows the trend in its value for three ranges: 0 to 1, 1 to 100, and 100+ coins:

As shown in the graph above, the Bitcoin Supply Distribution has increased for the 100+ BTC and 0 to 1 BTC cohorts since mid-2024, indicating growth among both the largest and smallest investors. The 1 to 100 coins group, however, has shown the opposite trajectory in this window; addresses of this size have seen their population shrink.

At the current exchange rate, the bottom and top ends of the 1 to 100 coins cohort convert to $72,000 and $7.2 million, respectively. Given this size, the holders belonging to the group would be the mid-sized entities that carry more power than the retail traders, but are still not too relevant when compared to the largest holders. Today, there are 954,000 addresses falling inside this tier.

The reduction in the count of these investors could partly be a result of promotion/demotion to the other cohorts. Either way, the trend would suggest that the holder base has become more concentrated on the extreme top and bottom ends recently. Following the growth in the 100+ coins cohor
