Ethereum turns unclaimed DAO hack funds into $220M security endowment

Ethereum is repurposing unclaimed funds from the infamous 2016 DAO hack to establish a roughly $220 million endowment aimed at strengthening security across the ecosystem.

The initiative, called the DAO Security Fund, will direct capital toward audits, infrastructure, incident response, and user protection as Ethereum scales.

The DAO hack, in which an attacker siphoned about 4.5% of all $ETH in circulation at the time, triggered Ethereum’s first major crisis and led to the hard fork that split the network into Ethereum and Ethereum Classic. Nearly a decade later, funds that were originally set aside for edge case refunds are being put to work to improve network security.

The endowment will be funded primarily by about 70,500 $ETH from an unclaimed ExtraBalance withdrawal contract, worth roughly $206 million, and around 4,600 $ETH and DAO tokens held in a curator multisig, valued at about $13.5 million. Most of the $ETH will be staked, generating an estimated $8 million in annual yield to support ongoing security efforts.

Funding will be distributed through DAO-based mechanisms, including quadratic funding, retroactive grants, and ranked choice voting, with the Ethereum Foundation setting eligibility criteria for each round. The grants are expected to support work across Ethereum mainnet, layer 2 networks, smart contracts, incident response, infrastructure, and user protection.

Griff Green, a former DAO curator and member of the white hat group that helped recover funds after the hack, said the goal is to redirect long-dormant capital toward making Ethereum safer as the network supports increasingly large amounts of value.

Expert Economist Shares the Real Reason Bitcoin Lags Behind Gold

Dr. Bob Murphy, a senior fellow at the Mises Institute and an economist, assessed the key reasons behind gold’s recent dominance over Bitcoin (BTC) and the changes in the global economy.


According to Murphy, “uncertainty” and “geopolitical risks” in the market are driving investors towards gold, a millennia-old safe haven asset, rather than digital assets.


Murphy attributed gold’s strong rise over the past 12 months to investors’ anxiety about “real crisis” scenarios.


Murphy stated that Bitcoin and gold normally behave similarly under the principles of “sound money,” but they diverge during times of crisis. According to Murphy:


Both assets rise only when an increase in liquidity (money printing) is expected in the economy. However, when real uncertainty arises, such as “what will happen next month is unknown,” or a “Mad Max” type of chaos scenario emerges, investors turn to physical gold instead of blockchain tokens.


While acknowledging that Bitcoin holds great promise and offers ease of use, Murphy stated that gold has retained its status as a tested and reliable safe haven for thousands of years.


Murphy stated that another critical factor in the rise of gold is the strategies of central banks, noting that China and Russia, in particular, have increased their gold reserves enormously. He added that the US’s status as a global superpower is being shaken and the world is evolving towards a multipolar structure. This situation is driving central banks towards non-dollar assets and physical gold.

XRP’s price action over the past several days has been tight and uneasy in a way that tends to make traders impatient. XRP is now drifting sideways just below $2, compressing into a narrower range between $1.9 and $1.96. To some, this looks like weakness.

To others, it looks like upside pressure is building. One technical analyst believes XRP’s price action is approaching a moment that could redefine the entire structure. That view was shared on X by crypto analyst Archie, who noted that its current consolidation is a precursor to a violent breakout that will send its price into new all-time highs.

Why The Current XRP Structure Matters

According to the technical analysis in question, XRP has been carving out a tightening pattern directly beneath a descending trendline that has acted as resistance since the beginning of the year. XRP printed a higher high of $2.4 in early January, retraced, and then began compressing into a narrow range of lower highs on the 30-minute candlestick chart.

The chart shows how the token has repeatedly respected the trendline without collapsing below support at $1.9. This, in turn, has created what Archie describes as a coil right under the resistance trendline. Interestingly, this kind of structure tends to resolve quickly once price makes contact with the trendline again.

Trendline Obliteration And The Push Beyond $2

According to the analyst’s prediction, the next touch of the trendline will not be another rejection. Instead, the next touch will lead to a clean break that sends XRP decisively through $2, which is a little more than a checkpoint. From his perspective, the repeated tests of resistance have weakened it, increasing the probability of a breakout as opposed to another downward rejection.
