BNB Chain Prepares Osaka/Mendel Upgrade to Improve Execution and Finality


$BNB Chain is heading into another major upgrade, and this time the focus is not on how much faster the network can go, but on how well it can hold up when real users start pushing it hard. The Osaka/Mendel hard fork is scheduled for April 28, 2026, at 02:30 UTC, and $BNB Chain’s own release notes say the mainnet upgrade is mandatory for BSC users, with v1.7.2 listed as the required release ahead of the fork. The upgrade bundles nine BEPs and includes changes such as a protocol-level transaction gas cap under BEP-652, along with blob-related and execution-level fixes in the mainnet release.

That timing matters because $BNB Chain has spent the past year aggressively chasing speed. The Lorentz hard fork cut block times from 3 seconds to 1.5 seconds, setting the stage for faster confirmations and stronger validator synchronization. Maxwell then pushed BSC down further to 0.75-second block times, while the Fermi hard fork most recently took BSC to about 0.45 seconds and emphasized predictable performance under growing network usage. Together, those upgrades turned $BNB Chain into one of the fastest major EVM networks, but they also raised the importance of stability, gas consistency, and execution quality.

Osaka/Mendel looks like the next step in that story, but with a different emphasis. Instead of trying to squeeze block production even lower, the fork is aimed at tightening how the chain behaves under pressure. That means fewer surprises during congestion, more predictable gas behavior, and a cleaner experience for developers who have to model how transactions will actually perform in live conditions. In a network that is already operating at sub-second speed, the difference between a chain that is merely fast and one that is fast and consistent becomes much more visible.

South Korea is kicking off a pilot that will replace government expense credit cards with blockchain‐based deposit tokens.

Blockchain Goes TradFi?
The Ministry of Finance and Economy announced on an official press release that the pilot project for the execution of national treasury funds using blockchain‐based digital currency has been approved.

This new official venture marks the second time in which South Korea’s government uses digital currency and deposit tokens for the execution of national treasury funds, following another pilot project for building electric‐vehicle charging facilities and paying national subsidies together with the Ministry of Environment.

Deposit tokens are digital claims on commercial bank deposits, issued on permissioned blockchain rails, spendable by citizens and companies at participating merchants and service providers.

In simpler words, deposit tokens are digital versions of the money already kept in a normal bank account. The bank “wraps” those deposits into tokens on a private (permissioned) blockchain, and you can then spend those tokens at approved shops or service providers, just like using a card or mobile wallet.

In contrast with Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), that are digital versions of a country’s official money, created and managed directly by its central bank, deposit tokens have programmable settlement, transparent tracking of public money, and real‐time reporting for the state.

Pilot Details
The press release states that under the current National Treasury Funds Management Act, business promotion costs and related operating expenses are required to be paid with government purchase cards, effectively blocking the use of deposit tokens. How a quantum computer can be used to actually steal your bitcoin in '9 minutes'


Part 1 of this series explained what quantum computers actually are. Not just faster versions of regular computers, but a fundamentally different kind of machine that exploits the weird rules of physics that only apply at the scale of atoms and particles.

But knowing how a quantum computer works does not tell you how it can be used to steal bitcoin by a bad actor. That requires understanding what it is actually attacking, how bitcoin's security is built, and exactly where the weakness sits.

This piece starts with bitcoin's encryption and works through to the nine-minute window it takes to break it, as identified by Google's recent quantum computing paper.

The one-way map

Bitcoin uses a system called elliptic curve cryptography to prove who owns what. Every wallet has two keys. A private key, which is a secret number, 256 digits long in binary, roughly as long as this sentence. A public key is derived from the private key by performing a mathematical operation on the specific curve called "secp256k1."

Think of it as a one-way map. Start at a known location on the curve that everyone agrees on, called the generator point G (as shown in the chart below). Take a private number of steps in a pattern defined by the curve's math. The number of steps is your private key. Where you end up on the curve is your public key (point K in the chart). Anyone can verify that you ended up at that specific location. Nobody can figure out how many steps you took to get there.

Technically, this is written as K = k × G, where k is your private key and K is your public key. The "multiplication" is not regular multiplication but a geometric operation where you repeatedly add a point to itself along the curve.
