Despite a formal directive from Donald Trump banning federal agencies from using Anthropic technology, multiple U.S. government bodies are reportedly still testing its latest AI model, Claude Mythos—just not publicly.
Why? Because the stakes have changed.
This isn’t about convenience or innovation hype. It’s about cybersecurity. Claude Mythos has drawn serious attention for its ability to detect critical software vulnerabilities—issues that even experienced human experts can miss. In today’s world, those blind spots can become entry points for major cyberattacks.
So while the policy says “no,” the reality on the ground is more complicated.
The ban itself stems from disagreements over how AI should be used in military and surveillance contexts. But at the same time, threats from foreign adversaries are evolving fast—and there’s growing concern that similar or even more advanced tools may already be in use elsewhere.
That creates a dilemma:
Follow the rules strictly and risk falling behind
Or quietly evaluate what works, even if it crosses political lines
It’s telling that interest in this technology isn’t limited to executive agencies. Members of Congress are also requesting briefings, signaling broader concern about staying competitive in an AI-driven security landscape.
