Bitcoin has been in a downtrend in 2026. Not catastrophically, not existentially, but enough for the usual cycle to invite the familiar ritual traders refreshing charts, headlines hunting for panic, and social feeds usually lighting up with declarations that the digital asset has "failed."

Except this time, that reaction has been far less visible within the industry.

The "Bitcoin is dead" narrative, which used to show up almost every cycle, hasn't really gained traction this time around.

That absence is arguably more important than the price action. And it shouldn't be surprising that there's more underlying faith in the asset despite the volatile price.

While the crypto world focuses on bitcoin rally, a major market issue tied to decentralized finance (DeFi) looks to have resolved for good.

Borrowing dollar-pegged stablecoins such as tether and USD Coin ($USDC) from heavyweight decentralized lending platform Aave now costs 5% or less in annualized interest. That's much lower than the 13%–14% seen last month following the KelpDAO hack.

The aftermath of the exploit saw whales pull out millions worth of coins, including stablecoins, from Aave, leading to borrowing pools running short of liquidity. This forced some traders to resort to borrowing stablecoins against their own locked stablecoin deposits. The net result was a surge in borrowing rates that could have easily spilled over into the wider market.

Normalization occurred after Aave governance suggested measures to improve stablecoin liquidity and ecosystem participants raised more than $160 million in relief funding.

The crisis has resolved, and Aave V3 $USDC has now normalized to around 3.86%. Morpho’s curated vaults sit in a 3.5% to 5.4% range, while Sky’s USDS savings rate is around 3.65%,” said Adam Haeems, head of asset management at Tesseract Group. Tesseract has $500 million in assets under management.

He added that the stablecoin rate cycle, from spike to fix to normalization, ran entirely independent of where bitcoin trades, with no spillover effects. “That is the more useful story for institutional allocators,” he noted.

Speaking of BTC, it topped $82,000 early today as oil prices crashed 6% and Nasdaq futures rallied on reports that Iran and the U.S. are nearing an agreement to end the conflict that has disrupted oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, triggering gas price surges in the U.S. and petrol spikes in Asia.

OnRe Finance said it has closed a $5 million strategic funding round to accelerate development of its tokenized reinsurance platform on Solana, with the raise co-led by Solana-focused treasury company Forward Industries and multi-strategy digital asset firm RockawayX.

According to the GlobeNewswire announcement, the capital will go toward expanding OnRe’s underwriting programs, hiring, and integrating its products more deeply into Solana’s DeFi stack.

Forward, listed on Nasdaq as FWDI, described the move as a “natural extension” of its Solana treasury strategy, which it says is shifting from relying solely on staking yield to adding “high-quality, real-world cash flows that are both complementary and uncorrelated.”

With allegations of manipulation increasing recently, manipulation has been detected in yet another altcoin.

Accordingly, the on-chain analytics platform Bubblemaps revealed signs of manipulation in the price of a memecoin.

Bubblemaps has reported detecting signs of potential price manipulation related to the memecoin MYSTERY.

Bubblemaps X claimed in a post that significant centralized control was detected in the launch of the MYSTERY token.

He stated that this was “a textbook example of market manipulation.”

Bubblemaps reported that shortly after the MYSTERY token was launched, 90 new addresses purchased 90% of the total supply, indicating organized “sniping.”

These wallets subsequently sold $100,000 worth of tokens and still hold 40% of the total supply.

Bubblemaps identified the movements of these 90 wallets, which captured almost the entire supply, as a classic pattern of “sniping” and price manipulation. Sniping refers to secretly buying newly launched tokens shortly after trading begins, usually before ordinary investors can react, using bots or automated trading tools.

In addition to these allegations, Bubblemaps accused some Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) involved in promoting the token of engaging in paid promotion.
