HIVE Digital Technologies has announced that it will progressively wind down its Bitcoin mining operations at its Boden, Sweden facility, shifting focus toward artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and high-performance computing (HPC). The move comes amid tax disputes and security deposit demands from Swedish authorities, which made ASIC mining economically unviable in the region.
Swedish Facility to be Repurposed
The 7 MW data center in Boden will not be dismantled but upgraded to a Tier-III HPC standard, supporting enterprise-grade GPU clusters. The facility is being equipped with NVIDIA GB300 architectures for AI training and inference workloads, positioning HIVE to deliver advanced computing capabilities for AI applications.
Canadian HPC Expansion
Meanwhile, HIVE’s subsidiary BUZZ High Performance Computing is scaling operations across Canada through a strategic alliance with Bell Canada AI Fabric. HPC capacity will grow from 4 MW in Manitoba to 16.6 MW across two provinces:
A new colocation facility in British Columbia will contribute 5 MW immediately, with potential to expand by an additional 7.6 MW
The site will host roughly 2,000 next-generation GPUs, complementing the 2,000 GPUs already operational in Manitoba
Near-term deployment targets over 4,000 GPUs in Canada, with long-term plans exceeding 6,000 units
Financial Outlook
HIVE projects approximately $200 million in annualized revenue from its HPC business. Following the announcement, HIVE shares rose about 5.6% on Monday, despite a year-to-date decline of roughly 16.7%.
This strategic shift underscores HIVE’s transition from traditional Bitcoin mining toward AI and HPC, leveraging global computing infrastructure and enterprise-grade technology to drive future growth.
