Ripple prepares to release almost $1.5 billion of XRP in less than 2 weeks

Ripple is set to unlock 1 billion XRP from its escrow contracts on May 1, continuing a monthly release program established in 2017.

At the time, the company placed 55 billion XRP into cryptographically secured escrow on the XRP Ledger to improve transparency and predictability around supply. 

Under this mechanism, 1 billion XRP becomes available at the start of each month. The structured approach was designed to address concerns about Ripple’s large holdings and to avoid sudden market shocks.

Now, the May release is another routine step in a schedule expected to run through at least 2027, as the escrowed balance gradually declines. 

With XRP currently trading at $1.47, the upcoming unlock carries a notional value of about $1.47 billion, though the actual figure will vary with price movements.

While closely watched for potential supply impact, historical patterns show that most of the unlocked XRP does not enter circulation immediately. 

In this line, Ripple typically re-locks 60% to 80% of the tokens into new escrow contracts. In recent months, including March and April 2026, about 700 million XRP were re-escrowed, leaving roughly 200 to 300 million XRP for operational use such as partnerships, liquidity provision, and ecosystem development.

This re-locking trend has helped limit net additions to circulating supply, meaning monthly unlocks have generally had minimal immediate market impact.

This shift toward full-time work is widely regarded as a positive indicator of employer confidence, suggesting that Australian businesses are committing to longer-term staffing arrangements rather than relying on casual or part-time arrangements to fill workforce gaps.Australia's unemployment rate remained steady at 4.3% for the month, consistent with what economists had projected. This level of joblessness reflects a labor market that, despite global economic headwinds, continues to hold up well. The participation rate edged slightly lower to 66.8% from 66.9%, indicating a marginal reduction in the share of the working-age population either employed or actively seeking work. While the dip is modest, analysts will monitor whether this trend continues in coming months. Adding to the broadly positive picture, total hours worked climbed by 0.5% over the period, pointing to increased productivity and workforce engagement across industries. Taken together, the March employment data paints a picture of an Australian job market that remains fundamentally sound.

Distribution pressure from whale cohorts sitting near their average cost basis is creating a ceiling that bulls haven’t cracked yet. One resistance level, in particular, is doing most of the heavy lifting right now.

According to Cryptoquant, key whale and retail cohorts carry average cost basis levels between $2,324 and $2,436, a band that neatly brackets current price action and creates natural sell pressure as holders look to exit near breakeven.

US spot ETH ETF inflows returned at $67.8 million on Wednesday after five straight days of net inflows per SoSoValue data, signaling slow but real institutional re-engagement.

Meanwhile, $111.6 million in liquidations hit over the last 48 hours, $70.8 million of that in longs, per Coinglass, a bruising reminder that leverage remains a liability at these levels.

Broader crypto sentiment has stabilized alongside equity markets, but ETH’s internal metrics suggest the recovery lacks the volume conviction needed to flip the next major resistance zone. The next 72 hours may determine whether this is a base-building phase or a fakeout.
