US President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform that the two warring parties in Europe, Russia and Ukraine, have agreed to a three-day ceasefire.

Bitcoin's price reacted to the news positively, but in a more modest manner.

"This Ceasefire will include a suspension of all kinetic activity, and also a prison swap of 1,000 prisoners from each Country. This request was made directly by me, and I very much appreciate its agreement by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy," reads the Truth Social post.

The precious metal has now risen more than 2% this week after recovering from one-month lows recorded earlier in May.Market sentiment improved after U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran remained active despite recent military clashes near the Strait of Hormuz. The strategically important waterway, which handles nearly 20% of global oil and gas shipments, has faced severe disruptions since tensions escalated earlier this year. The U.S. military confirmed that it disabled several Iranian-flagged oil tankers attempting to enter Iranian ports in the Gulf of Oman. Reports also indicated that American forces responded to attacks on U.S. warships in the region with strikes near Iran's Bandar Abbas and Qeshm port areas. Meanwhile, investors closely monitored the latest U.S. labor market data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nonfarm payrolls rose by 115,000 in April, surpassing expectations of 65,000. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3%. Despite the stronger-than-expected jobs report, traders reduced expectations for additional Federal Reserve interest rate hikes this year. The softer outlook for rates pressured the U.S. dollar lower, making gold more attractive to international buyers. Other precious metals also moved higher, with silver surging 2.5% to $80.41 per ounce and platinum rising 0.2% to $2,065.70 per ounce.Gold

Shanghai launches blockchain trading platform as commodity index drops 4.81%
The SSE Commodity Index dropped to about 7,468 points on May 8, 2026. Compared to last year, this was over 5% less.

To deal with falling prices, Shanghai is launching new initiatives.

The city has introduced a blockchain platform for bulk commodity trading, aiming to boost growth and modernize trade across the Yangtze River Delta.

The new platform was created by the Digital Innovation Alliance for Shipping and Trade to link data from important organizations like Shanghai Metals Market, China Materials Storage & Transportation Group, Shanghai International Port Group, and the National Bulk Commodity Warehouse Receipt Registration Center.

TeraWulf’s $21 million HPC revenue surpasses bitcoin mining for first time in Q1
Former pure-play bitcoin miners like TeraWulf are starting to report AI and HPC revenue overtaking their mining segments.

TeraWulf said it is targeting 250 MW to 500 MW in additional annual contracted capacity.

TeraWulf's high-performance computing business overtook its bitcoin mining segment for the first time last quarter, following a trend of former pure-play bitcoin miners shifting focus to AI and hyperscaler infrastructure. 

The company reported $34 million in total revenue for Q1, roughly flat from $34.4 million from a year earlier.

HPC lease revenue reached $21 million, surpassing digital asset revenue of just under $13 million as it ramps up long-term compute contracts.

"This is the first period where HPC leasing is meaningfully reflected in our financials," CEO Paul Prager said on the earnings call.

It is a milestone that is becoming more common across the sector. Riot Platforms recently reported $33.2 million in first-time data center revenue in Q1, with its AMD deal driving the bulk of that segment as it expands beyond bitcoin mining.

Despite this, TeraWulf saw a $427.6 million net loss, widening from $61.4 million a year earlier, though nearly half was attributed to non-cash warrant revaluations.

CFO Patrick Fleury described the quarter as "a business in transition," with revenue increasingly tied to "stable, contracted" compute contracts.

At its Lake Mariner facility in New York, TeraWulf reported that 60 MW of HPC capacity is now generating revenue, with additional buildings slated to come online later this year.

The company is also repurposing part of its bitcoin mining infrastructure to support HPC workloads, causing costs to rise to nearly $200 million.

Chainlink extended its recovery this week as bullish on-chain data, rising social activity, and technical breakout signals pushed the token to its highest level since January.

The United Arab Emirates is leaving OPEC. After nearly 59 years as a member of the oil cartel, the UAE announced its exit from both OPEC and OPEC+, effective May 1, 2026. The decision unshackles one of the world's largest petroleum producers from the quota system that has governed its output for decades.

The UAE was pumping approximately 3.5 million barrels per day before the planned exit, making it the seventh-largest oil producer globally. With quota restrictions removed, more than 1 million additional barrels per day could theoretically hit the open market. For context, that is roughly the entire daily oil consumption of a country like Spain.

The exchange did not disclose the average purchase price or the total amount spent on the acquisitions.

Coinbase, one of the largest publicly traded cryptocurrency exchanges, has maintained a policy of holding digital assets on its balance sheet as part of its long-term strategy. The company first disclosed its Bitcoin holdings in its 2021 direct listing prospectus and has periodically added to its position.

Context and Implications

The disclosure comes amid a period of institutional Bitcoin adoption, with several publicly traded companies adding the asset to their treasuries. Coinbase’s holdings, while substantial, remain smaller than those of MicroStrategy, which held over 214,000 $BTC as of early May 2025.

Coinbase’s decision to increase its Bitcoin holdings signals continued confidence in the asset class despite ongoing regulatory uncertainty in the United States. The company has been at the center of regulatory discussions, including its legal battle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
