Bitcoin steady as S&P 500 hits record, but options market isn't buying the peace trade
Bitcoin climbed to $74,935 in Asian hours Thursday, up 0.7% over 24 hours and 5.4% on the week, as U.S. equities closed at record highs on reports the U.S. and Iran had reached an "in principle" agreement to extend negotiations past next week's April 7 ceasefire expiry.

The S&P 500 finished up 0.8% and the Nasdaq 100 gained 1.4%, both all-time highs, capping a two-week rally from late March lows.

Ether led major tokens, up 8.1% on the week to $2,360, extending the outperformance against bitcoin that emerged earlier this week. XRP gained 3.6% to $1.41, dogecoin rose 4.8% to $0.098, and solana added 2.2% to $85.

The equity rally is running ahead of what other markets are willing to confirm. Long-end Treasury yields barely moved. Gold held near $4,800. Brent crude ticked up to $95 as the U.S. pressed ahead with a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which remains effectively closed.

"Stocks are basically expressing their view that the war in the Persian Gulf is all but over," Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers,

A UK lawmaker has asked the financial authorities to investigate Nigel Farage’s promotion of a Bitcoin (BTC) treasury firm, raising concerns about potential market abuse and conflicts of interest due to the politician’s potential ties to the crypto industry.

On Monday, UK Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper asked the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) CEO, Nikhil Rathi, to investigate Reform UK leader and Member of Parliament (MP) Nigel Farage over his ties to the crypto industry.

In the letter, the lawmaker highlighted Farage’s recent appearance in a promotional video for crypto treasury firm Stack BTC, in which he is also an investor, showing him purchasing roughly £2 million in Bitcoin.

As reported by Bitcoinist, the Reform UK leader bought 37 BTC, worth around $2.7 million, on Monday on behalf of the company, becoming the first sitting British MP and party leader to publicly back Bitcoin, Stack BTC noted.

Despite the triumph for crypto in British Politics, Cooper considers that Farage’s Bitcoin promotion, alongside his repeated support for digital assets, “raises extremely serious questions about potential market abuse, a conflict of interest, and exposure of ordinary people to financial harm.”

The lawmaker highlighted Farage’s campaigns to expand the use of digital assets in the UK, including establishing a Bitcoin reserve fund, reducing capital gains tax on crypto assets from 24% to 10%, and enacting legal safeguards to prevent banks from terminating accounts associated with digital currency transactions.

“Taken together, these facts beg the question whether Mr Farage is promoting cryptocurrencies through his political platform in order to inflate crypto values for his own financial benefit, as well as that of his party and his inner circle of donors,” Cooper argued.

Bitcoin rally is taking a breather near $75,000. Onchain data shows why

Bitcoin has climbed nearly 10% this month, but the rally is running into resistance near $75,000. The pause is notable as U.S. stocks push to record highs.

On-chain data shows holders are selling into strength, helping explain the slowdown.

It is evident from an on-chain indicator called realized profit/loss, which tracks the total dollar value of gains or losses locked in by holders when they move their coins on-chain. The indicator compares the current price at which coins are being moved with the price at which they last moved (the assumed acquisition cost), effectively showing whether investors are selling at a profit or a loss.

Values above 1 indicate increased profit-taking, and the 30-day exponential moving average (EMA) is currently well above that threshold. The EMA is used to smooth out day-to-day noise and highlight the broader trend in realized profits.

"Profit-taking activity is rising, with the 30D EMA of the Realized Profit/Loss Ratio at 1.16, indicating investors are selling into strength. A sustained move above $78.1K will require the market to absorb this overhead supply," the firm said in a report.

Profit-taking was particularly strong on Tuesday as Bitcoin briefly climbed toward $76,000 before quickly slipping back below $75,000. According to CryptoQuant, investors realized about $1.14 billion in profits during the move, one of the largest single-day readings this year.

The indicator, though widely tracked, has limitations, mainly that it assumes coins moving on-chain are being sold. In reality, they may simply be moving between wallets or exchanges for custody, rebalancing, or internal transfers.
