Aave records $6 billion TVL drop as Kelp hack exposes structural risk at DeFi lender

Aave just watched $6.6 billion walk out the door, and it's not because anyone hacked Aave.

The protocol's total value locked dropped from $26.4 billion on April 18 to nearly $20 billion in U.S. morning hours on Sunday, per DefiLlama. The $AAVE token fell 16% to $92, and daily fees spiked to $1.99 million as liquidations ripped through the weekend.

Depositors are running because Aave is carrying a hole it did not create. When attackers drained 116,500 rsETH from Kelp's bridge on Saturday, they dumped the stolen tokens on Aave V3 as collateral and borrowed wrapped ether against them.

On-chain trackers put the Aave-specific borrow at roughly $196 million, with total positions across Aave, Compound and Euler around $236 million.

Aave is the largest lending protocol in DeFi, where users deposit crypto to earn yield and other users borrow against collateral. Kelp is a liquid restaking protocol, which takes ether that has already been staked on Ethereum and routes it through a separate yield-generating system called EigenLayer, issuing a receipt token called rsETH in exchange.

That rsETH is what users trade and, critically, what some users posted on Aave as collateral to borrow against.

On Saturday, attackers tricked Kelp's cross-chain bridge into releasing 116,500 rsETH, about $292 million worth, to an address they controlled. They then deposited that stolen rsETH onto Aave V3 as collateral and borrowed wrapped ether against it.

A bridge is a blockchain-based took that transfers tokens between different networks, where they may not be originally supported.

Ethena surges 14%, tests resistance as bulls target breakout

A 14% price jump in Ethena [ENA] has pushed the asset toward a key resistance level with a history of reversals.

Despite this make-or-break zone, experts’ bold projections and rising accumulation among the top 100 holders suggest that ENA could potentially break above this prolonged barrier this time. 

As of this writing, ENA was up 14.22% over the past 24 hours and is currently trading at $0.123.

With the rising price, market participants have shown notable interest in the asset, as trading volume climbed 72% to $283.55 million during the same period.

On the daily chart, ENA appears bullish, as it has recently broken out of a descending channel pattern. However, due to the key resistance at $0.1345, the price seems to be struggling to continue its rally.

The daily chart shows that ENA has been facing this resistance since the beginning of February 2026.

The current price action suggests that if ENA successfully breaks above this key level, it could potentially see a price jump of over 45% and reach the $0.198 level.

However, if it fails to do so, the possibility of a significant decline could arise.

At press time, technical indicators Money Flow Index (MFI) and Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) were at 86.01 and -0.02, respectively, indicating that the asset was in an overbought zone with weakening capital inflows.

This points to a potential slowdown or short-term correction in price momentum.

Large-cap tech stocks are back, driving the S&P 500 to new highs and giving investors confidence that the latest stock market rally has room to continue, even with the ongoing risk of war between the US and Iran.

A Bloomberg analysis suggests that since the S&P 500 bottomed out on March 30, 2026, the tech sector has jumped from being the worst-performing sector in the benchmark index to its best-performing sector.

The index tracking the so-called "Magnificent Seven" tech giants has risen 20% during this period, reversing a 17% drop since its peak last October.

Microsoft (MSFT) stock perhaps best represents this reversal—it plummeted 34% from its peak on October 28 last year to its low on March 27 this year, before surging 19%.

"One thing we've learned over the past six months is that the S&P 500 really can't go up without tech stocks," said Ohsung Kwon, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo.

 More than half of the S&P 500's recent gains have come from just seven companies—Nvidia (NVDA), Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft, Broadcom (AVGO), Alphabet (GOOG), Meta Platforms (META), and Apple (AAPL).

According to data compiled by Bloomberg, the combined market capitalization of these seven companies has increased by approximately $4 trillion in just a few weeks.

“This has been an extremely rapid reversal,” said Paul Wick, chief investment officer at Seligman Investments, which manages approximately $30 billion in assets. “In a way, it’s a catch-up trade, a position-adjusting trade.”

In fact, it’s difficult to attribute this movement to fundamental factors, as the fundamentals of these companies haven’t really changed in such a short period. The geopolitical outlook remains thorny, with ongoing tensions in the Middle East threatening global growth. Despite a recent pullback, oil prices remain high, keeping inflation sticky.

In just a few days, the market shifted from a logic of "fund-driven" to a dual game of "liquidity vs. risk event."

The current market is caught in a tug of war between "liquidity-driven rally" and "risk impact from the escalation of the Iran situation."
