Morgan Stanley crosses $100mln in Bitcoin holdings – Why impact on BTC limited?

The market might be going through its most powerful shift from TradFi to DeFi yet.

On the fundamental side, the stablecoin market cap hitting a new all-time high of around $320 billion is a strong signal that liquidity is expanding. More capital is flowing on-chain, and we’re seeing deeper integration across L1 ecosystems as they continue building partnerships with major banking players.

But even on the technical side, this transformation looks like it’s peaking.

Traditional banking players are now integrating into crypto not just through stablecoins, but also through exchange-traded funds (ETFs), with Morgan Stanley’s Bitcoin [BTC] ETF right at the center of this shift. 

Reinforcing this trend, Morgan Stanley recently purchased 177.76 BTC worth roughly $13.75 million.

This brings its total holdings to around $102.02 million across three tracked addresses, based on Arkham data at press time.

As one of the biggest TradFi players, these inflows reinforce how DeFi integration isn’t just limited to on-chain activity. Instead, it’s expanding into institutional investment products as well, setting a playbook for other institutions to follow, with firms like Charles Schwab (managing around $11 trillion in assets) clearly in focus.

That said, unlike the fundamental side where these flows support the broader TradFi-to-DeFi shift, the technical side comes down to Bitcoin’s price action, which sits at a key inflection point.

Naturally, this raises the question: Can MSBT’s buying move against the broader ETF narrative and add upside pressure to BTC?

Cryptocurrency analyst Behdark refuted these bullish predictions, forecasting that Bitcoin's price will actually fall first before rebounding.

How low will Bitcoin's price fall?

Despite the price increase, this cryptocurrency analyst stated: "It's very likely that Bitcoin's price will first plummet from here." Behdark believes the bullish sentiment in the market may be...misleading to investors. This could be a deliberate strategy by market makers to attract as many participants as possible before pushing the price down again.

As the analyst explained, Bitcoin's fundamental structure remains very bearish, especially considering that the digital asset appears to be forming a triangle or antimagnetic pattern. The latter is a complex corrective pattern, meaning it tends to plummet again after a rebound.

In either case, both patterns suggest a high probability that Bitcoin's price will fall first before rising.  Therefore, there is a high probability of opportunities to buy cryptocurrencies at lower prices and then wait for the eventual upward trend.

Bitcoin drops from recent highs as traders watch CME gap, DeFi hack fallout


The crypto market is trading back in familiar territory following a short-lived spike to its highest point since early February on Friday.

Bitcoin is trading a hair under $75,000 while ether ($ETH) is at $2,300, both significantly lower than Friday's highs of $78,300 and $2,460.

One reason for traders to be bullish is that the bitcoin futures market on the CME, a venue favored by institutions, closed at $77,540 on Friday and opened at $74,600 to create "CME gap" that spans 3.8% to the upside. A similar gap occurred last week and was filled before the end of the day on Monday.

The first steps have been taken: Bitcoin's gained 1.5% since midnight UTC, suggesting sentiment is warming following a volatile weekend.

The market tumbled over the weekend as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz came to a halt after opening on Friday. The renewed closure led to a jump in the price of crude oil from $78 to $88 per barrel.

This weighed on risk assets, with Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 futures both down by 0.59% since midnight.

Derivatives positioning

Marketwide, crypto open interest (OI) held steady near $120 billion over the past 24 hours. Trading volume, in contrast, jumped 30%, suggesting a surge in activity without a corresponding increase in new positions. That potentially points to increased turnover, short-term positioning or traders rotating risk rather than deploying fresh capital.

OI in solana (SOL), bitcoin , ether ($ETH) and $XRP ($XRP) held largely steady. OI in HYPE futures declined by 3% alongside as the price fell, pointing to capital outflows. Elsewhere, OI in AVAX and SP 500 perpetuals rose by 6% to 10%, respectively.
