Canada’s top trade negotiator to the United States, Janice Charette, emphasized that the date is better understood as a checkpoint—not a cliff. Even if negotiations are not finalized by then, it doesn’t mean the agreement will fall apart.
At the center of this discussion is the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which came into force in 2020 and serves as the backbone of trade across North America. Under its terms, the agreement must be reviewed every six years. If not extended, it transitions into annual reviews—a scenario that has raised concerns among businesses.
For companies, predictability is everything. The possibility of yearly reassessments introduces uncertainty that could influence investment decisions, hiring strategies, and long-term planning. It’s not just about policy—it’s about confidence.
Charette acknowledged that formal negotiations between Canada and the U.S. have not yet begun, but discussions are already underway on critical sectors. These include steel and aluminum tariffs, automotive trade, and softwood lumber—industries deeply tied to Canada’s economic health.
The reality, however, is that these issues are complex and unlikely to be resolved quickly. Add in shifting global trade priorities, and it becomes clear that expecting a comprehensive agreement by the July deadline may not be realistic.
Still, there’s reassurance in continuity. Even if consensus takes longer, the USMCA remains in force. In fact, the agreement has helped Canada maintain one of the lowest effective U.S. import tariff rates globally, offering a significant advantage to its exporters.

This would represent an unprecedented level of corporate exposure to a single digital asset, reinforcing the firm’s long-term conviction in Bitcoin as a treasury reserve.

Unlike ETFs, which may experience inflows and outflows based on market sentiment, Strategy’s approach is fundamentally long-term, with Bitcoin treated as a permanent balance sheet asset. This distinction continues to amplify its influence on market dynamics and institutional adoption trends.
