$XRP Ledger (XRPL) is working on a new feature designed to provide institutional users with greater privacy when transferring tokens. The "Confidential Transactions" feature, included in the upgrade proposals offered with the network's latest software release, XRPL 3.3.0, specifically targets the institutional market for tokenized assets, which exceeds $530 million.
The confidential transactions feature is designed to hide token balances and transfer amounts, while still making accounts and the types of tokens used visible on the network. This aims to provide the level of privacy required by organizations when conducting transactions on the blockchain.
This feature is primarily intended for Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPT) based on XRPL. Its main expected use cases are funds, bonds, and other tokenized financial assets.
The system will use cryptographic methods, such as zero-knowledge proofs, to verify the validity of a transfer without disclosing the transaction amount. This framework is designed to protect the network's verifiability while preventing the leakage of confidential financial information into the blockchain's publicly available data.
According to data, the $XRP Ledger currently holds real-world assets worth approximately $1.38 billion. Of this, about $845.7 million is accounted for by Ripple's USD-backed stablecoin, $RLUSD.
Excluding $RLUSD, the value of tokenized assets on XRPL exceeds $530 million. Issuers of these assets include financial institutions and tokenization companies such as Ondo, VERT Capital, Archax, and Société Générale.
XRPL 3.3.0 adds not only the confidential transactions feature. The release also includes other corporate-focused upgrade proposals, such as batch processing, sponsor support, permission delegation, and dynamic multi-purpose token transaction handling (MPT). These enhancements aim to address needs like batch processing, covering third-party transaction fees, authorization management, and dynamic token modification.
However, these updates are not yet activated on the main $XRP Ledger network. To implement these features, at least 80% of the $XRP Ledger's trusted validators must provide continuous support for a two-week period.
