CryptoQuant: The Ledger Incident Accelerated the Movement of Old Bitcoins

Long-term Bitcoin holders have accelerated the movement of older coins, according to a CryptoQuant analyst known as nocoffeenobrain. The analyst notes that this movement does not necessarily indicate selling or profit-taking. A key catalyst for the increased activity is the recent incident involving Ledger, which has prompted users to migrate their assets en masse to new devices with new seed phrases. As a result of these actions, the analyst expects the 7-day moving average of Bitcoin activity to rise in the coming days.

‘Old money’ has stronger Bitcoin ‘diamond hands,’ says BingX exec

BingX chief strategist Kevin Lee states that wealthy, traditional "old money" investors exhibit stronger long-term conviction ("diamond hands") for Bitcoin than many crypto-native traders. He notes these investors increasingly view Bitcoin as a portfolio diversifier for steady growth, not for short-term speculation. Data from a CoinShares survey supports this, finding long-term appreciation and diversification as top reasons for affluent crypto holders. However, broader adoption among the wealthy remains low, with a JPMorgan survey showing 89% of family offices have no crypto exposure, and average allocations are minimal.

In 2019, a Bitcoin Network 'Whale' Transferred $378 Million and Paid Only $1 for It

In September 2026, a long-dormant Bitcoin wallet, holding 4,500 BTC (worth approximately $378 million at the time), became active. These coins, originally acquired in August 2019 when valued at around $53.2 million, had not moved for over seven years. The owner transferred the entire balance to a new address in a single transaction, paying a network fee of only about $1.10. This movement did not appear to be a signal for an immediate market sale, as the funds were sent to another private wallet with no outbound transactions to known exchanges. The event coincided with other notable whale activity, including large Bitcoin withdrawals from major exchanges like Coinbase and Kraken, and occurred as market sentiment data indicated a peak in Bitcoin-related FOMO.

Institutions Did Not Sell Cryptocurrency During the Downturn: Results of Bitwise Survey

A Bitwise survey of 15 wealth management firms (AUM ranging from hundreds of millions to tens of billions) found that none of the institutions reduced their crypto allocations during the market's ~50% decline from October 2025 to April 2026. Some even increased their positions. The survey revealed a firm consensus only on Bitcoin among respondents. Every institution holding crypto owns Bitcoin, which is typically their first, largest, and longest-held crypto position. Most view it as a store of value with growth potential, often comparing it to gold. In contrast, allocations to Ethereum and Solana are more selective, with smaller positions, shorter investment horizons, and defined exit strategies. Some institutions do not hold them, struggling to classify them within traditional frameworks. Overall crypto allocations are generally modest, mostly between 1-2% of investment assets. Institutions commonly use or plan to use spot crypto ETFs, citing lower costs and operational simplicity, though some opt for direct custody. Key obstacles to increasing allocations include custody security, the need to justify the investment thesis, portfolio structure, internal procedures, reputational risk, and asset classification. Career risk for investment managers was also noted. Positive catalysts for further institutional adoption are seen as regulatory clarity and more public investments by peer institutions. Negative risks include a major industry crisis, technical failures, lack of real utility for Ethereum/Solana, or if blockchain growth fails to create token value.

Bitcoin buyers wary of July sub-$58K floor amid onchain data ‘anomaly’

Bitcoin buyers showed unusual restraint during the July price dip below $58,000, a new analysis of onchain data reveals. The "HODL Waves" metric, which tracks dormant coin supply, indicated a significant lack of immediate buying activity around the late-September 2024 lows. Onchain analyst Willy Woo described this muted reaction as an "anomaly," suggesting the bottom may have been bought slowly, potentially by a single large investor or a small group, rather than the typical herd behavior seen at previous market lows. This pattern adds to ongoing uncertainty about whether July truly marked the bear market's floor. Despite a price recovery above $80,000 and substantial net inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs in August, some analysts warn the broader downtrend structure—marked by a series of lower highs—remains intact. They caution that without a decisive turnaround, Bitcoin risks revisiting its bearish price history.

Strategy Founder Michael Saylor Hints That the Company May Resume Buying Bitcoin (BTC)! Here Are the Details

Michael Saylor, founder of MicroStrategy, has hinted that the company may resume its Bitcoin (BTC) purchases. Saylor sparked market speculation by posting the phrase "We are back" on social media alongside a Bitcoin symbol. While not a direct confirmation, this has led to interpretations that the firm is preparing for a new BTC acquisition. MicroStrategy is a leading institutional holder of Bitcoin, and its purchasing activity is closely watched as an indicator of institutional demand. Saylor's past similar posts have preceded major purchase announcements, fueling current investor expectations. However, the company has not yet made any official announcement regarding a new purchase. Market participants now await an official statement. Any new purchase by MicroStrategy would draw significant attention to the transaction's size and funding method. The company's ongoing accumulation strategy could further increase its Bitcoin holdings, though its financial performance remains heavily influenced by BTC's price volatility.

Five Charts to Understand the Starting Point of the 2026 Bitcoin Bull Market

"Five Charts Signaling the Start of Bitcoin's 2026 Bull Run," an article by Anthony J. Pompliano, argues that the Bitcoin bear market is likely over. The analysis uses five key charts to support a bullish outlook for the next 18-24 months. First, a chart combining Bitcoin's mining electricity cost with the RSI indicator suggests a historical buy signal has appeared, similar to patterns preceding past bull markets. Second, Bitcoin's correlation with gold has reached a record high, positioning both as hedges against currency devaluation amid expansive fiscal policies. Third, despite a recent divergence, Bitcoin's price has historically caught up to expansions in the M2 money supply, indicating potential for upward movement. Fourth, a technical analysis of a 4-hour chart shows Bitcoin breaking out from a consolidation pattern, suggesting a path toward $90,000. Finally, data illustrates that long-term holding is crucial, as most of Bitcoin's annual gains come from just a few major up days, making frequent trading counterproductive. The conclusion states that while volatility will persist, the new bull market has begun and disciplined investors stand to be rewarded.

Over 24 Hours, 1,214 BTC Worth $86 Million Moved from Inactive Bitcoin Wallets Dormant for 11 Years

Summary: August has seen a significant movement of long-dormant Bitcoin, beginning with a security incident involving Coldcard hardware wallets. However, a recent wave is unrelated to theft and likely represents "old school" holders moving assets for security. Data from btcparser.com shows that on August 19-20, 28 inactive wallets suddenly transferred 1,314.41 BTC (worth ~$94.03 million). Remarkably, 92.4% came from addresses first created in 2014, with 21 transactions neatly moving 50 BTC each from November/December 2014 wallets. The owner consolidated funds from older P2PKH to newer P2WPKH addresses. These coordinated moves, grouped into the same blocks, show no current signs of being sent to an exchange. Blockchair's privacy tool rated some transactions as "low" due to patterns like repeated input addresses. Another 2014 wallet moved 150 BTC (~$10.73M) on Thursday. In total, 1,214.42 BTC (~$86M) from likely one or two 2014-era owners was moved. Additional transfers from 2016 and 2017 wallets also occurred. The 2014 cohort achieved staggering gains of at least 16,645%, having bought when Bitcoin traded between roughly $310 and $427 in late 2014, compared to its much higher price now.

"Dormant" Bitcoin Skyrockets: August's 10-Day Metrics Surpass Entire July's Results

'Dormant' Bitcoin Soars: Activity in the first 10 days of August surpasses entire July's results. Movements, tracked by blockchain analyzer Btcparser.com, involved Bitcoin held on addresses created between 2010 and 2017. While July saw an average daily movement of 40.78 BTC, the first ten days of August averaged 220.91 BTC per day—more than a fivefold increase. Transaction count also surged from 30 in July to 85 in early August. Activity was concentrated in clusters, suggesting individual entities were emptying multiple old addresses, particularly from 2013 and 2014 cohorts. After excluding the two most prominent clusters (33 transactions from 2014 and 19 from Oct 2016), the residual daily rate of 121.51 BTC was still triple July's average. The timing coincides with a widely-reported Coldcard wallet vulnerability, prompting speculation about holders moving old coins. However, the tracked addresses predate the vulnerable Coldcard firmware, indicating these are not stolen funds but possibly precautionary wallet migrations by unrelated holders. Market conditions showed no signs of panic selling, with BTC prices rising during the period.
