Ban on Mining Takes Effect in Moscow Region and Kursk Oblast

A ban on cryptocurrency mining has come into effect in Moscow, the Moscow region, and eight border districts of Russia's Kursk region. The decree was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on July 31. In Kursk, the affected areas include the Belovsky, Bolshe-Soldatsky, Glushkovsky, Korenevsky, Lgov, Rylsky, Sudzhansky, and Khomutovsky districts, as well as the city of Lgov. The prohibition will remain in force until December 31, 2032. Moscow authorities have stated that mining consumes a significant amount of energy without benefiting the economy. In the Kursk region, the restriction is attributed to an energy deficit. A similar ban is already in place in 13 other energy-deficient Russian regions, including Irkutsk Oblast, Buryatia, and Zabaykalsky Krai.
