Wall Street’s fight with Hyperliquid could decide who controls 24/7 markets
CME and ICE are building 24/7 markets, but Hyperliquid’s oil-linked perps are forcing Washington to decide who gets to run them.CME Group plans to make its cryptocurrency futures and options trade around the clock beginning May 29, a product line that posted $3 trillion in notional volume in 2025 and is running 46% above that pace year-to-date.

ICE's New York Stock Exchange is developing a tokenized securities platform built for 24/7 operations, instant settlement, dollar-sized orders, and stablecoin-based funding, pending regulatory approvals.

Both exchange operators have directed capital and infrastructure toward the same always-open structure pioneered by crypto-native venues.

Bloomberg reported on May 15 that the same two exchange giants are pressing US officials to rein in Hyperliquid, the offshore crypto venue that built the model before either incumbent filed.

According to people familiar with the discussions, CME and ICE alleged that Hyperliquid's anonymous trading environment could distort global oil prices, facilitate market manipulation, and enable state actors to circumvent sanctions enforcement.

Bloomberg had separately reported in March that a Hyperliquid perpetual contract tracking WTI crude generated more than $1.2 billion in 24-hour volume during a traditional-market oil spike, briefly becoming the platform's second-most-traded market.

Harvard University’s foundation fund’s first-quarter 2026 SEC 13F filings revealed significant changes to the institution’s crypto asset positions. According to the filings, Harvard reduced its holdings in BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT, by approximately 43%, down to 3,044,612 shares. This position is currently valued at approximately $117 million.

This move follows Harvard’s decision to reduce its IBIT position by approximately 21% in the final quarter of 2025. This marks the second consecutive quarter of a reduction in the university’s Bitcoin ETF exposure.

On the other hand, Harvard completely closed its approximately $86.8 million position in BlackRock’s spot Ethereum ETF. This indicates that the institution has fully exited its Ethereum ETF investment.

While a cautious approach is evident from Harvard, institutional demand from the Middle East continues to grow. Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, Mubadala, increased its IBIT position to 14,721,917 shares. This investment is valued at approximately $566 million. Mubadala’s IBIT holdings at the end of 2025 were at 12,702,323 shares.

Over the past week, institutional demand for Ethereum appears to have slowed significantly, as no influx of fresh capital was recorded on any day of the week.

Data provided by SosoValue shows that the Ethereum ETFs have recorded a total weekly outflow of $65.65 million, marking the highest weekly withdrawal recorded since January.

While the last week has proven to be the poorest week the Ethereum ETFs have witnessed since January, the asset saw mixed price action.

This suggests that the brief rally seen on some days of the week might have been driven by market hype or sentiment and not demand from investors, especially institutions.

Nonetheless, the extended withdrawals seen on all days of the week suggest that institutional investors are taking caution and are hesitating to lock their funds in the Ethereum-based investment product.

The highest outflow was seen on Tuesday, May 12, when the funds recorded a total of $130.62 million in outflows within 24 hours, as market sentiment turned negative.

Apparently, it appeared that the brief price rallies witnessed on some of the days could not drive institutional interest in Ethereum, causing the steady withdrawals seen throughout the week.

BlackRock has not only established its leadership in the Bitcoin ETF market, but also in the Ethereum ETF ecosystem as ETHA, its Ethereum ETF, accounted for the highest outflow recorded on each day of the week.

Although the broader momentum is weak and no inflow was seen throughout the week, BlackRock still positions itself as a key player in the Ethereum ETF market.
