Bitcoin is approaching a rare four-month decline streak: the market hasn't seen anything like it since 2018.

Renewed macroeconomic uncertainty due to another US government shutdown and the resulting impasse regarding progress on the CLARITY Act has undermined Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency market as a whole. Much of the momentum we saw in the first two weeks of the year has now been lost.

In addition to this reset, Bitcoin is teetering on the brink of writing an unpleasant chapter in its history. For the first time since 2018, Bitcoin is close to a fourth consecutive month of declines. As the end of the month approaches, traders are targeting the $87,800 mark for BTC, as a close below this level would effectively confirm this outcome.

A rare historical pattern is emerging.

Corrections or drawdowns are not uncommon in Bitcoin bull markets.  In fact, if we look at history, the current correction of approximately 30% from the highs set in October of last year is well within the range of past bull cycle corrections. We've even seen steeper corrections, such as in the 2021 bull cycle, before the uptrend eventually resumed.
However, it's noteworthy how rarely Bitcoin has seen four consecutive monthly red candles. Notably, the last time this happened was in 2018, when Bitcoin didn't break its streak of red months with a fourth. Instead, Bitcoin continued to decline by approximately 20% with two more red months. A similar situation was observed in 2015, when losses ultimately approached 60% after a four-month red streak.
The takeaway here isn't that history should repeat itself, but that risk asymmetry increases around these inflection points.  A fourth monthly red candlestick, followed by confirmations such as steeper downward momentum, low volume, and on-chain selling pressure, will ultimately challenge the bullish thesis.

Everstake, a crypto staking provider, said in a new report that 2025 was a “year of sharp contrasts” for Ethereum, filled with major network upgrades and rising institutional adoption even as the price of ETH remained relatively flat.

In its Ethereum Staking Insights & Protocol Analysis report, Everstake said total value staked reached about 36.08 million ETH, or roughly 29.3% of supply, with net growth of more than 1.8 million ETH. As of Tuesday, Jan. 27, about 36.5 million ETH is staked – roughly 30.26% of supply, according to Coinbase data.

The report also highlighted continued growth in network activity, with Ethereum Layer 1 (L1) transactions rising about 30% over the year to around 1.5-1.6 million per day, while Layer 2 throughput surpassed roughly 300-330 transactions per second (TPS).

The findings underscore that Ethereum has continued to scale and attract larger players despite ETH’s underperformance. Currently, Ethereum’s total value locked (TVL) stands at nearly $72 billion, while Ether is changing hands at $2,930, up 4% on the day, but down 10% over the year.

Everstake said the Layer 1 is increasingly being used as a settlement layer, while most day-to-day activity has shifted to Layer 2. The findings pointed to protocol upgrades, including Pectra, which introduced EIP-7251 to raise the maximum effective validator balance from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, allowing large stakers to consolidate validators.
