US prosecutors propose late 2026 retrial for Tornado Cash co-founder

Federal prosecutors on Monday submitted a proposed schedule for the potential retrial of Tornado Cash co-founder and developer Roman Storm to begin later this year. Storm was found guilty on one of three charges related to illegal money transmitting in 2025, but a jury deadlocked on two other charges, setting the stage for a potential retrial.

US Attorney for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) Jay Clayton Clayton proposed an Oct. 20 final pretrial conference in Storm’s case, signaling a potential trial start date of late October or November 2026. The filing noted that the timeline was subject to the court’s decision on a Rule 29 motion filed by Storm requesting acquittal of the remaining charges.

The Digital Asset Privilege Tax Act, tucked inside a 1,624-page revenue bill that forms part of Illinois’ $55.9 billion fiscal year 2027 budget, levies a 0.2% charge on the value of any digital asset involved in an exchange, transfer, custody, or wallet service conducted on behalf of an Illinois customer.

Oman Launches Mandatory National Bitcoin Mining Pool in State-Backed Push for Regulatory Control

Oman launched a mandatory state-backed Bitcoin mining pool requiring all licensed miners to participate, tightening regulatory oversight while expanding the country's $700 million-plus push into industrial-scale Bitcoin mining.

Oman has taken one of the most direct steps by any government to bring bitcoin mining under formal state oversight, launching a mandatory national mining pool that licensed operators across the sultanate are required to join.

The pool, Omanhash.com, was launched by Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and will run in cooperation with Frontier Technologies LLC, an Omani blockchain and Web3 company. 

Enegix Global, a vertically integrated digital energy and infrastructure company, built the technology platform and liquidity infrastructure behind it. The company called it the official national cryptocurrency mining pool of the Sultanate of Oman.

Under the approved regulatory framework, Omanhash.om is the sole official and mandatory mining pool for all licensed cryptocurrency mining companies in the country. The pool is expected to consolidate roughly 10 exahashes per second of computing power in its initial phase — a measure of the total computational work directed at securing the Bitcoin network and, by extension, minting new coins.

That hashrate matters for Bitcoin in a direct way. The more concentrated and regulated that hashrate becomes within a national framework, the greater the government’s visibility into mining revenue, energy consumption, and the flow of newly minted bitcoin. It seems the country is not trying to ban or restrict the activity — it is pulling it into a structured, trackable system.

Illinois has passed the first U.S. digital asset news tax, imposing a 0.2% levy on crypto transactions via its $55.9 billion budget. Brokers must register with the Illinois Department of Revenue and collect the tax separately. Industry groups, including the Crypto Council for Innovation, oppose the law, calling it harmful to on-chain news innovation. The tax applies directly to activity, not income or gains, and takes effect January 1, 2027.

FTX Founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) Announces He Will Launch a New Cryptocurrency Project!

Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), the founder of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, announced that he plans to launch a new cryptocurrency project after being released from prison. Bankman-Fried, who is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence, sparked renewed debate in the cryptocurrency sector with his announcement.

SBF spoke about his future plans during a meeting with fellow inmate David Bunewacz in prison. Bankman-Fried said he wanted to return to business after his release and that he would need between $50 million and $100 million in initial capital to establish a real company.

SBF’s most striking announcement was his plan to launch a new digital asset. The former FTX founder stated that he would launch his own cryptocurrency after his release, claiming that investors would show great interest in the project. Bankman-Fried was quoted as saying, “I’ll launch my own coin and everyone will flock to it.”

Bankman-Fried, once considered one of the most influential figures in the cryptocurrency sector, was tried in 2022 following the collapse of FTX on various charges, including misuse of investor funds and fraud. After the trial, SBF was sentenced to 25 years in prison, and while he appealed the decision, the US court rejected his appeal.

Industry experts emphasize that Bankman-Fried’s statements currently only concern personal plans and that the eviction date is quite far off. However, the statements reveal that the former entrepreneur, who once built a multi-billion dollar empire, maintains his desire to return to the cryptocurrency sector.

The launch of a spot Litecoin ETF has marked a significant development for the cryptocurrency market. $LAB has extended its rally to a sixth consecutive day, climbing about 57% over the past week as whale buying, technical momentum, and renewed interest in the project's ecosystem pushed the token back toward the $14 level.

Data from CoinGecko showed $LAB trading near $13.91 on June 17, up nearly 40% over the past 24 hours and more than 57% over the previous seven days.

The move comes after the token spent much of early June under pressure following a steep correction from its June 2 all-time high of $27.30.

According to market commentator Alastar, whale wallets added roughly $540,000 in long positions within an hour as $LAB continued its advance.

Data shared by the trader showed 129 whale long positions against 85 short positions, with total long exposure reaching $27.58 million compared with $10.58 million in short exposure.

The same data showed a whale long-to-short ratio of 260.67%, while net whale buying volume during the previous hour stood near $490,000 against approximately $179,000 in net selling.

Alastar described the $13 region as a key level to monitor, noting that larger holders could begin reducing positions around that area because many long positions were already sitting on substantial unrealised profits.

Recent buying activity arrived after $LAB successfully defended support between $9 and $10, a zone that attracted dip buyers after weeks of selling pressure.

Market participants also closed bearish positions as momentum indicators improved, helping fuel a rapid recovery from the June lows.

Speculative interest around the project has also remained active.

$LAB operates as a multi-chain AI trading terminal connecting Ethereum, Solana, and BNB Chain, while community discussions have focused on the rollout of its mobile application and ongoing work tied to prediction market features.
