A septuagenarian is facing months in prison after admitting to stealing more than $1 million from the US government.According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 71-year-old Eric Banks has pleaded guilty to stealing a check drawn by the US Treasury Department to a New York-based business. The DOJ says Banks stole a U.S. Treasury check worth approximately $1.13 million. He then opened a bank account in the name of the New York firm the check was drawn to and deposited the check to the account. And that was just the beginning. "Banks then conducted multiple illegal money transactions designed to conceal the source of the funds from the stolen Treasury check. "Banks also helped seven other individuals launder money that was also stolen from the US government. "In addition, Banks created a second fake entity and opened a bank account in the name of this second fake entity. Other individuals who obtained and deposited stolen U.S. Treasury checks transferred over $1.3 million to this bank account created by Banks. "The seven individuals that Banks helped launder money for are facing separate charges of collectively stealing approximately $7.44 million in US government funds. Bitcoin is pushing into a more decisive part of its recovery. After spending weeks rebuilding from the February flush, the market is no longer just defending support. It is now pressing toward a key resistance cluster around the $80K, which makes this the kind of area where a simple relief rally either matures into something bigger or gets rejected back into range.

Bitcoin Price Analysis: The Daily Chart

The daily chart is improving, but it has not fully turned bullish yet. $BTC has managed to climb from the blue demand area near $60K to $62K and is now moving toward the old breakdown region around $75K to $80K. That is an important development, because this yellow zone acted as support before the market lost it during the broader downtrend. Reaching it again shows that buyers have regained some control, but reclaiming it is a different question altogether.

The broader structure still asks for caution. The price remains below the declining 100-day and 200-day moving averages, and both of them are still sloping lower, which means the macro trend has not been repaired yet. In other words, $BTC is rallying into overhead supply while still sitting under major trend filters. If buyers can force a daily acceptance above the $75K area, the technical picture would improve materially. If not, this remains a rebound inside a larger corrective phase.

Bitcoin drops 3% as PPI beats forecasts, and a tiny detail could skew the next macro trade
Bitcoin traded lower after January producer inflation came in above consensus. That sets up a longer stretch in which rate expectations may steer crypto pricing ahead of the next producer price index (PPI) print on March 18.

January PPI inflation was 2.9% year over year, above the 2.6% consensus estimate. Core PPI (excluding food and energy) at 3.6% year over year versus 3.0% consensus.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the PPI for final demand rose 0.5% month over month on a seasonally adjusted basis and 2.9% year over year on an unadjusted basis.

According to the BLS release, the upside in January was concentrated in services, while goods and energy moved lower. Final demand services increased 0.8% on the month, and within services, trade-service margins rose 2.5% (trade indexes measure margins received by wholesalers and retailers).

Final demand goods fell 0.3%. Energy prices dropped 2.7%, including a 5.5% decline in gasoline.

The December Producer Price Index didn't just beat expectations, but it also revealed a persistent problem that forces markets to rethink the entire 2026 rate path.

Final demand PPI rose 0.5% month-over-month, the sharpest jump since July, driven almost entirely by a 0.7% surge in services while goods prices sat flat. The headline came in at 3.0% year over year, beating expectations of 2.7%, but core PPI rose to 3.3% from 2.9%, the highest level since July 2025.

Markets sold the news immediately. Bitcoin dipped below the $82,400 zone as it was trying to recover from an intraday low of $81,100. Meanwhile, Fed funds futures repriced to just 52 basis points of cuts for all of 2026, with the first quarter-point move now pegged for June.

The dollar index is up 0.82% over the past 24 hours, and real yields on 10-year TIPS are near 1.90%.

This raises the question of whether this confirms that disinflation has stalled in the exact place the Fed can't ignore: services, where pricing power is sticky, and margins are expanding rather than compressing.
