Goldman hikes average Brent oil forecast to over $100 a barrel for March

March 13 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs ​expects Brent oil to average over $100 a barrel ‌in March, and $85 in April, it said on Friday, as energy prices remain volatile due to the Iran war and damage ​to Middle East energy infrastructure and disruptions in ​the Strait of Hormuz.

Brent futures for May were ⁠trading at $100.13 a barrel at 0530 GMT, heading ​for about an 8% weekly increase. On Monday, prices ​hit $119.50 a barrel, its highest since mid-2022.
Goldman sees Brent crude gradually easing back to the low $70s later in the year, however, ​if the disruption to oil flows proves longer-lived, ​oil prices could reach higher peaks and end the year at ‌higher ⁠levels.

Goldman said a two-month disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively shut since the start of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran on February ​28 and ​through which ⁠one-fifth of the world's oil and natural gas supply passes, would push its fourth ​quarter average Brent price estimate from $71 a ​barrel ⁠to $93 a barrel.
Goldman on Thursday raised its Brent and WTI crude oil price forecasts for the fourth quarter of ⁠2026 ​to $71 a barrel for Brent, ​from $66, and $67 per barrel for WTI from $62.

South Korea has started laying the groundwork for a new tracking system designed to impose taxes on profits from cryptocurrency investments.

An AI Crypto Tracking System
According to The Korea Times, the National Tax Service (NTS) announced this Thursday that they are moving ahead with an AI-driven system to track crypto investment gains as they prepare to start taxing virtual asset profits from January 2027. The NTS said that the system “is expected to serve our goal of collecting individuals’ virtual asset transaction data starting in 2027”.

A $2 Million Project
In order to achieve this, the NTS issued a tender for what they call a “Comprehensive System for Virtual Asset Transaction Analysis”. There, they detailed that the project has a budget of around ₩3 billion ($2 million) and that the designing of the system will start in April. A pilot operation for the system should be ready to begin in November, after passing multiple tests runs, and be ready to fully launch between November and December.

The notice was uploaded to an online bidding system run by the Public Procurement Service, the agency in charge of sourcing goods and services for the government and affiliated bodies. A winning contractor is expected to be chosen and signed within this month.

A New Era Of Crypto Surveillance
With this new system, the NTS plans to aggregate data from domestic exchanges, blockchain analytics and existing tax databases, leveraging AI and machine learning to detect unusual patterns and potential tax evasion.

This recent update follows past January NTS’s unveiling of a new “control tower” unit created under the 2026 National Tax Administration Operation Plan to coordinate all virtual‐asset tax enforcement and monitoring of offshore flows.

In a notable development in the cryptocurrency market, a significant amount of Bitcoin has flowed out of exchanges in the past week. According to data shared by blockchain data and analytics company Sentora, a net outflow of Bitcoin worth a total of $1.68 billion occurred from cryptocurrency exchanges this week.

Analysts note that large outflows of $BTC from exchanges generally indicate that investors are moving their assets to cold wallets for long-term storage. According to Sentora, recent data suggests that Bitcoin continues to be accumulated by institutional custody services as well as individual investors.

In the crypto market, asset outflows from exchanges are often seen as a positive signal that selling pressure may be easing. This is because investors may prefer to hold their assets for longer periods by moving them to secure wallets outside of exchanges, rather than engaging in short-term trading.

According to the data, Bitcoin’s price has also risen in the last 24 hours. Market data shows that $BTC is trading at approximately $73,503 at the time of publication, having gained 4.71% on a daily basis.

Experts say that renewed interest in the market, particularly from institutional investors, could support a recovery in Bitcoin’s price. Accumulations made through institutional custody services are considered part of long-term investment strategies.

The recent downward trend in Bitcoin reserves on exchanges also supports this view. Analysts note that the continued net outflows from exchanges could reduce the supply in the market and, if demand remains strong, could put upward pressure on the price.

Dogecoin Spot ETFs Record Zero Net Inflows Over 24 Hours Despite 7% Spot Market Rally

Major cryptocurrencies extended their gains on Friday, with Dogecoin rising as much as 7%. Dogecoin saw a significant rise on Friday, increasing from $0.094 to $0.1004. The rise builds on a prior-day rebound from a low of $0.091 and continues the broader recovery from a March 8 low of $0.086.

At the time of writing, DOGE was up 5.33% in the last 24 hours to $0.998 and up 7.22% weekly. The crypto market is extending a stretch of consolidation, with the total value near $2.45 trillion for a third straight session, reflecting a market that has been stuck in a tight band since the sharp sell-off in late January.

The continuing market sentiment has bled into spot ETFs with Dogecoin spot ETFs, which have recorded zero inflows since the start of March.

In the last 24 hours, zero inflows have been recorded in Dogecoin ETFs, a trend that has been ongoing since March 3. According to Sosovalue data, the trio of Dogecoin ETFs, Grayscale, 21shares and Bitwise saw $0 in daily net inflows within the last 24 hours. Dogecoin ETFs still saw a bit of trading, with total value traded ranging between $212,460 and $1.02 million since this date.

Analysts suggest the current phase on the market is more of a stabilization than breakout. While some on-chain metrics are improving, a sustained bull run would likely require a fresh inflow of capital, among other things.

Until a clear macro catalyst or wave of new capital arrives, the market might continue to consolidate near the upper end of its range rather than seek a breakout.

The cumulative total net inflow for Dogecoin ETFs remains steady at $7.45 million, while total net assets equaled $9.27 million, according to SoSoValue data.

Bitcoin climbs to near $72,000 after Treasury Secretary Bessent attempts to calm oil fears

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the U.S. will allow the purchase of some Russian oil in order to help cap surging prices.

The news sent bitcoin jumping to just below $72,000, and the price of oil down about $2 per barrel.
With fears growing over the economic impact of surging oil costs, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday evening that the Trump administration is taking steps to promote stability and lower energy prices.

"To increase the global reach of existing supply, the U.S. Treasury is providing a temporary authorization to permit countries to purchase Russian oil currently stranded at sea," said Bessent in an X post.
"The temporary increase in oil prices is a short-term and temporary disruption that will result in a massive benefit to our nation and economy in the long-term," added Bessent, suggesting market fears about the rise in oil prices were overblown.

Indeed, oil rose nearly 10% to nearly $100 per barrel on Thursday, helping to send the already slumping U.S. stock market to sharp losses.

Bitcoin BTC$72,325.21, which was able to hold the $70,000 level throughout most of the day, has jumped to just below $72,000 in the minutes following the Bessent post, now higher by 2.2% over the past 24 hours.

WTI crude oil has pulled back about $2 per barrel, currently trading at $95.22.

Robust ETF flows fuel the rally

According to data shared by Wu Blockchain, spot Ethereum ETFs recorded a total net inflow of $72.36 million on March 12.

This capital injection marks the third consecutive day of positive net inflows for Ethereum products.

Interestingly, Ethereum's institutional inflows actually outpaced Bitcoin's on the day.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a total net inflow of $53.86 million. This marks a solid fourth consecutive day of positive net inflows for the flagship cryptocurrency, indicating that traditional finance investors are steadily deploying fresh capital across the entire digital asset sector.

Is another Bitcoin breakout imminent?

According to analytics firm Glassnode, a distinct "accumulation cluster" is actively forming within the $62,000 to $72,000 price range.

Investors are clearly buying up the supply, but analysts warn that the intensity of this current accumulation is "modest" when compared to the aggressive buying phases that preceded previous major cycle expansions.

Glassnode notes that buyer conviction is steadily building, but they caution that the underlying foundation for a mid-term breakout remains "thin so far."
