Bitcoin advocate group to fight Basel's 'toxic' treatment of cryptocurrency

The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) says it will push the US Federal Reserve to change how Bitcoin is treated, as the central bank is set to issue rules on how banks should implement international guidelines for asset risk weighting.

"BPI will be reviewing this proposal closely and submitting a public comment to ensure that US regulators get Bitcoin's treatment right," Bitcoin Policy Institute managing director Conner Brown said in an X post on Wednesday.

It comes just a day after the Fed announced it will issue a proposal for public comment on how US banks should implement risk-weighting guidance, which determines how risky different assets are on a bank's balance sheet, from the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.

Brown said Bitcoin (BTC) is "treated as a toxic asset under the Basel framework, a global standard for banking regulations.

He added it carries a 1,250% risk weighting, which was "harsher than virtually all other asset classes."

"More efficient regulation" is the aim: Fed

Federal Reserve vice chair for supervision Michelle Boman said on Thursday that the agency will be proposing rules in the coming weeks to implement the final phase of Basel in the US.

Bowman said that the aim is "more efficient regulation and banks that are better [positioned] to support economic growth, while preserving safety and soundness."

STRC could be funding more Strategy bitcoin buys than ever
A community-built dashboard that tracks Strategy’s STRC sales in real time suggests that today could produce the largest single-day STRC-funded bitcoin ($BTC) purchase in history.

By 11am New York time, the unofficial tracking system estimated that 2.7 million shares of STRC had traded, all at or above its $100 par, also known as its “stated amount” or “quasi-peg.”

This morning’s trading range was $100-100.07.

Because Strategy has previously provided guidance that the company might sell STRC when the stock price is above its stated amount, it’s possible to estimate the number of STRC that Strategy is adding to the circulating supply.

By default, the dashboard speculates that 40% of that volume might involve Strategy itself as the seller. Overall STRC volume figures include both corporate as well as secondary sales and the site allows users to adjust that percentage via a user-configurable slider.

At its default 40%, the site’s model estimated that Strategy had sold over 1 million shares of STRC, funding the purchase of up to 1,500 $BTC.

That was, of course, barely 90 minutes into the regular session.

Over 700,000 shares had already traded in pre-market, accumulating an estimated 394 $BTC before the opening bell. By 1pm, total volume over $100 per share exceeded 4.6 million shares.

STRC pays a lavish, 11.5% annualized dividend and tries to hold a $100 quasi-peg. It competes with high yield junk bonds and other risky yield products with retail-focused advertisements focusing on its monthly dividends and disclaiming its many risks in fine print.

One user on X noted 1.2 million shares had traded within eight minutes of the open. Another marveled as it made 60% of the previous day’s record-breaking volume in just 90 minutes.

Ethereum Foundation publishes new mandate defining its role, core principles
The Ethereum Foundation (EF) released a sweeping new document outlining its philosophy, priorities and long-term role in stewarding the world’s second-largest blockchain network.

The 38-page “EF Mandate,” published Friday, frames the blockchain, whose ether (ETH) token is beaten only by bitcoin BTC$71,859.13 in market capitalization, as a technology designed to protect individual freedom in an increasingly centralized digital world and lays out the principles the nonprofit says must guide its development.

The document comes at a time of transition for the organization, following recent shifts in Ethereum’s technical roadmap and the resignation earlier this year of one of the foundation’s co-executive directors.

"The Ethereum Foundation is the original steward of the Ethereum project,” the document says. “The Foundation is not the parent, owner, or ruler of Ethereum. We are not ‘the system’ itself.”

At the center of the mandate is the concept of self-sovereignty, which the foundation describes as Ethereum’s core purpose.

“The first aim is to ensure Ethereum becomes and stays a decentralized and resilient tool for self-sovereignty,” the manifesto states. “Our first fundamental principle is that a user has the final say over their identities, assets, actions, and agents.”

To preserve that goal, the foundation says four properties must remain central to Ethereum’s development: censorship resistance, open source and free (as in freedom), privacy, and security, collectively known as CROPS.

“We hold that these properties – CROPS – must remain, as an indivisible whole, the sine qua non of all Ethereum’s development priorities, which cannot be displaced,” the mandate says.

SEC's advisory group backs tokenized securities push, outlines how to keep it safe

The committee that steers the U.S. securities regulator on investor issues voted to support a new effort to regulate stock transactions on blockchains.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is pushed by its Investor Advisory Committee to move forward on tokenized securities regulations.

The committee voted for recommendations that outline how such rules should proceed, citing needs for mandatory reporting and fairness in customer orders.

SEC Chairman Paul Atkins said the process is already underway to issue some direction to the industry to allow regulated tokenization.
A committee that advises the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission recommended the agency move forward on a tokenized-securities policy that would allow traders to cut out the kind of go-between settlement that Wall Street investment firms have relied on for decades.
The SEC's Investor Advisory Committee voted Thursday to recommend narrow exemptions for the blockchain-based innovation for the trading of stocks, as long as the activity comes with mandatory disclosures, routine outside supervision and "a requirement that the trading of tokenized equity securities seeks to ensure that all investors receive the best terms for their orders."

These crypto assets still meet the definition of securities under the law, as SEC Chairman Paul Atkins has regularly contended, which means the activity needs parallel safeguards to the traditional system. Atkins said his agency is working toward formal regulations on tokenization. Now this work has the backing of an official recommendation from the committee, whose members include veterans from major trading firms, institutional investors and academics.

Solana has been experiencing a rough stretch in the markets lately, with its price falling well below $100 and hitting a low of $85. The drop marks a prolonged bearish trend that has tested the patience of many investors who entered the market at higher levels.

Despite weak price action, Solana Spot ETFs are attracting capital at an unprecedented rate, surprising even seasoned market watchers. This suggests that long-term conviction in the cryptocurrency remains strong even as short-term selling persists.

Notably, Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas brought Solana’s ETF numbers into focus in a recent post on X, highlighting that the investment fund has accumulated an impressive $1.5 billion in net inflows since its launch in July 2025. He noted that this remarkable growth occurred despite SOL’s 57% price crash from its ETF launch date, which was one of the toughest debut periods for any ETF product.

Balchunas pointed out that when Solana’s market cap is compared to Bitcoin’s, the numbers look even more impressive. On that basis, the inflows into Solana are roughly $54 billion for Spot Bitcoin ETFs, approximately double what BTC itself attracted at the same point in its ETF journey. He noted that the key difference here is that Bitcoin was surging at the time, whereas Solana reached equivalent inflows while in decline.
