Fundstrat’s Lee sees a crypto comeback once precious metals cool

Fundstrat managing partner Tom Lee predicts that crypto markets will likely catch up once gold and silver begin to take a break from their recent rallies.

Tom Lee said on CNBC’s Power Lunch on Monday that crypto should be going up on a weaker dollar and an easing Federal Reserve.

However, it doesn’t have the leverage tailwind because the industry delevered, “and as long as gold and silver are rising, then there’s a FOMO into buying that instead of crypto,” he said.

“Because when gold and silver take a break, then and in the past, that would lead to a Bitcoin and Ethereum surge afterwards.”

Gold prices hit an all-time high of $5,100 on Monday, following a gain of 17.5% since the beginning of the year. Silver also skyrocketed, hitting a peak price of $110 at the same time after gaining 57% so far this year.

Market observers have attributed the surge in precious metals to rising geopolitical tensions, trade tariff threats, and US dollar weakness, driving investors to safe-haven assets.
October crash still hurting markets

Earlier in the interview, Lee explained that markets were still feeling the ripple effects of the Oct. 10 deleveraging event, which “crippled many key players in the industry,” including exchanges and market makers. As a result, he said, the industry is “limping along, but the fundamentals have improved a lot.”

Bitcoin (BTC) has lost 30% of its value since its October peak and is struggling to find any momentum above $95,000, having tanked back to support at $86,000 on Monday.

“I think the precious metal move has sucked a lot of the oxygen out of the room,” said Lee.

“So, I think crypto prices aren’t quite keeping up with fundamentals, but as you know, when fundamentals go up and to the right, prices eventually follow.”

According to the researcher, the post- liquidation reset two weeks ago ushered in a period of new price discovery, but without meaningful spot demand, leverage has taken the wheel. De Maere notes that this dynamic has led to sharp, erratic swings in both directions, with traders reacting quickly to macro data rather than building longer-term exposure.

The Wintermute report essentially highlights a split macro narrative: stronger-than-expected January nonfarm payrolls pushed Treasury yields higher and pressured rate-cut expectations, while a softer January CPI reading at 2.4% year over year eased inflation fears and sparked a short-lived relief rally. Still, De Maere stresses that exchange-traded fund (ETF) flows remained under pressure, limiting follow-through.Beyond crypto, Wintermute sees a broader cross-asset rotation underway, with investors trimming artificial intelligence (AI) and growth exposure in favor of cyclicals and value plays. De Maere argues that this shift, driven partly by valuation fatigue and fiscal-year earnings results, hits crypto in a brutal fashion.

Bitcoin network hashrate hit a seven-month low over the weekend as a massive winter storm bombarded the United States with snow and ice, pushing miners to curtail operations to stabilize the energy grid.


American weather forecasting company AccuWeather reported on Monday that the massive winter storm affected three dozen states over the weekend, with widespread snow, ice, and power outages affecting one million energy customers.


Data from mining data tool CoinWarz shows that Bitcoin’s (BTC) network hashrate began to drop on Friday, and by Sunday, it hit 663 exahashes per second (EH/s) — a more than 40% slump in hashrate across two days.


However, it has since begun to recover and is sitting around 854 EH/s as of Monday.


“Approximately 40% of global Bitcoin mining capacity has gone offline in the past 24 hours due to extreme winter weather,” said Abundant Mines, a Bitcoin miner based in Oregon.


“As energy demand surges, some mining operations reduce activity to ease pressure on regional power systems and support critical infrastructure. This flexibility is a built-in strength of Bitcoin mining. It can scale down quickly when needed and resume just as fast when conditions allow.”

The US contributes the largest amount of the world’s Bitcoin mining power, with Bitcoin mining data platform Hashrate Index estimating the country contributes nearly 38% of the global hashrate.


A 2024 report from the federal Energy Information Administration also found there were upwards of 137 crypto-mining facilities in the US.


Miners helped to stabilize the grid


Bitcoin miners help stabilize power grids through load balancing by scaling their power requirements up or down quickly. Miners can set up near wind or solar installations and ramp up to soak up surplus power and shut down when the grid tightens.

Crypto market sentiment reaching a year-low could be one of the few signs of a potential rebound, according to crypto analytics platform Santiment.

“This sentiment data is currently one of the few strong bullish signals available,” Santiment said in a report on Friday. “A silver lining is the extreme negativity on social media. The ratio of bearish to bullish comments is heavily skewed toward fear,” Santiment said.

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index, which measures overall crypto market sentiment, posted an “Extreme Fear” score of 20 on Saturday, indicating that investors are cautious about the crypto market. On Friday, the index recorded an “Extreme Fear” score of 16, the lowest in 2026 and the first time it had reached that level since Dec. 19.
