Market maker Wintermute said Thursday that Bitcoin miners are sitting on underutilized balance sheets and need to treat their Bitcoin holdings as active financial instruments rather than passive reserves if they want to stay competitive into the next halving. The assessment, published in a blog post, outlined a sector under pressure from shrinking margins, rising energy costs, and a price cycle that has underdelivered relative to historical patterns.

Wintermute said this is the first four-year market cycle in which Bitcoin has failed to produce the 2x price return typically needed to offset revenue cuts from the halving. Gross margins have peaked at levels that previously marked bear market floors, and transaction fees have not compensated for the shortfall, remaining episodic rather than structural.
Miners have historically held large amounts of Bitcoin, a behavior Wintermute attributed to holdover instincts from the HODL era. The firm said miners collectively hold close to 1% of total Bitcoin supply, and that the full range of treasury management tools remains largely unused across the sector.

The firm outlined two approaches miners could adopt. Active strategies include derivatives structures such as covered calls and cash-secured puts to monetize market risk. Passive options include deploying Bitcoin into lending protocols to generate interest income.

"The miners who treat their BTC holdings as a working asset rather than a passive reserve will carry a structural edge into the next halving," Wintermute said. It described active balance sheet management as the most underutilized lever available to miners.

Alongside the yield argument, Wintermute noted that miners have built large-scale power infrastructure in low-cost energy markets that directly overlaps with what the AI industry urgently needs.  Even more innovative is its "one-click looping" feature: users can efficiently build leveraged return structures through the protocol's native interface without manually switching and combining multiple protocols. This design significantly lowers the operational threshold, condensing what was originally a complex, multi-step strategy into a single-click operation.

BlackRock's iShares Staked Ethereum Trust (ETHB) recorded $15.5 million in trading volume on its first day of trading Thursday, with 592,804 shares changing hands on Nasdaq. Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart described the debut as "very, very solid for a day 1 ETF launch."
The fund holds a mix of 80% staked Ethereum and 20% Ethereum, with Coinbase serving as custodian. It launched with $106.7 million in net assets and charges a 0.25% sponsor fee, reduced to 0.12% on the first $2.5 billion in assets under management for the first year. Staking rewards will be distributed monthly and sourced from Ethereum network validators operated by Figment, Galaxy Digital, and Bitwise-owned Attestant.

ETHB's opening-day volume came in below comparable stakingETF launches tied to Solana. The Bitwise Solana Staking ETF (BSOL) recorded $55.4 million on its October debut, while the REX-Osprey SOL + Staking ETF (SSK) posted $33.7 million when it launched in July. The gap reflects differences in market timing and investor appetite at each fund's respective launch date.

The product rounds out BlackRock's crypto ETF lineup alongside the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) and iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA). IBIT has attracted more than $62.8 billion in inflows since its 2024 launch, according to Farside Investors data, while ETHA has pulled in $11.9 billion over the same period.
BlackRock is also pursuing a Bitcoin Premium Income ETF that would sell covered call options on Bitcoin futures to generate yield through collected premiums. ETHB adds a yield-generating mechanism to BlackRock's Ethereum exposure, differentiating it from ETHA, which holds unstaked Ethereum.

A New York resident lost close to $1 million in cryptocurrency. That single case became one of the clearest examples of the damage done by SocksEscort — a for-hire proxy service that gave criminals across the globe a way to hide while they stole.

A Network Built On Hijacked Devices
US and European authorities announced Thursday they had shut down SocksEscort after years of operation. The service worked by infecting routers and other internet-connected devices with malware, turning them into cover points that masked the real locations of cybercriminals.

According to the Department of Justice, the network had quietly burrowed into at least 369,000 devices spread across 163 countries. Criminals could then route their attacks through those compromised machines, making them far harder to trace.

The malware at the heart of the operation — known as AVrecon — had been publicly identified by cybersecurity firm Black Lotus Labs as far back as July 2023. The network kept running anyway.

The takedown was not a single agency effort. Law enforcement from Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Romania, and the US worked the case together.

On the American side, the FBI’s Sacramento Field Office, the IRS Criminal Investigation Oakland Field Office, and the Department of Defense’s Defense Criminal Investigative Service all had a hand in it.

Europol and Eurojust provided cross-border coordination support. Black Lotus Labs and the nonprofit Shadowserver Foundation supplied technical intelligence that helped investigators connect the dots.

Interestingly, the latest on-chain data suggests that the $74,000 resistance might not be the barrier it appears to be. According to a prominent crypto analyst on the social media platform X, the Bitcoin price seems to have a free runway to return to above the $80,000 mark.

$BTC Price Has Free Runway To $82,000: Analyst

Market pundit Ali Martinez took to the X platform to share an on-chain insight into the Bitcoin price movement over the coming weeks, with a return to around $82,000 looking more likely with no obstacles. This on-chain observation is based on the UTXO Realized Price Distribution (URPD) metric, which shows the next relevant levels for $BTC.

The URPD metric shows how critical a price level is by tracking the volume of cryptocurrency purchased at a specific level. This is because the capacity for a Bitcoin price level to function as a support or resistance zone usually depends on the number of $BTC investors who have their cost basis at the given level.

Typically, price levels below the current spot value with substantial buying activity are often considered major support regions. Meanwhile, levels above the current price with significant investor cost bases usually function as major resistance areas.

Crypto code commits fall 75% as developers move to Al projects Blockchain ecosystems are losing developers across the board while artificial intelligence projects dominate growth on GitHub, the world's largest platform for hosting and collaborating on software code.

Weekly crypto commits (publishing new code) to repositories have fallen roughly 75% since early 2025, dropping from about 850,000 to 210,000, while active developers declined 56% to around 4,600, according to data from analytics platform Artemis.

Repositories track where developers are writing code, building tools and launching new projects, they offer one of the clearest signals of where software innovation is happening.

The contraction stands in stark contrast to the broader software ecosystem. GitHub added about 36 million developers in 2025 alone, bringing its global base to more than 180 million, with platform-wide commits rising roughly 25% year over year, according to GitHub's Octoverse report.

Much of that growth is flowing into artificial intelligence. GitHub now hosts more than 4.3 million Al-related repositories.

The number of repos importing large language model software development kits surged about 178% to more than 1.1 million over the past year, while generative Al projects now attract more than 1 million monthly contributors.

The numbers suggest developers are reallocating time toward Al infrastructure rather than blockchain.
