Rumors are circulating that the exchange is actively opposing the proposed Bitcoin (BTC) de minimis tax exemption, allegedly to promote a regulatory framework that favors stablecoins over Bitcoin.

Coinbase's Alleged Lobbying

As the US government seeks to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for the crypto industry-especially following Donald Trump's re-election campaign-tax exemptions have become a focal point in congressional discussions.

In a March 4 interview, Senator Cynthia Lummis mentioned that both the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee are contemplating a $300 exemption, which would allow crypto users to utilize Bitcoin for transactions without incurring capital gains taxes.

"We're trying to figure out the appropriate criteria for distinguishing when a transaction-such as a sale of Bitcoin-should be subject to capital gains taxes and when it can be used as a straightforward medium of exchange, akin to the US dollar," explained Lummis.

However, industry insights shared by Marty Bent, managing partner at Ten31, indicate that Coinbase may be lobbying against such exemptions. Bent claimed on social media that the exchange is attempting to "nuke" the Bitcoin exemption while seeking to support stablecoins exclusively.

However, the current market dynamic appears to be softening and may gradually tilt toward a bullish direction as several key indicators begin to flip with a clearer bias.

Bitcoin bears could be gradually fading

The Bitcoin Bull Score Index, a gauge used to assess the level of bullish or bearish sentiment in the market, rose to 30 over the past day.

This reading marks the highest level recorded since October 2025. Before this move, the index had remained significantly lower for an extended period. The recent shift suggests that bearish pressure in the market is beginning to ease after dominating trading activity for weeks.

According to analyst Julio Moreno, the recent shift developed gradually over the past few days and largely reflects improving capital inflows.

“Bull flags that turned on were: exchange flows, stablecoin liquidity growth and price momentum.”

Moreno noted that the change mainly reflects a shift in sentiment, moving from “extremely bearish” positioning to simply “bearish.” However, he cautioned that the development does not yet confirm the start of a sustained rally.

Social sentiment also appears to be improving.

Recent findings indicate that Bitcoin has continued to gain traction following the mining of the 20 millionth token earlier this month. The milestone has renewed market attention and added to broader market discussions around Bitcoin’s [BTC] long-term scarcity.

Taken together, the current market phase appears to represent a relief period.

Flagship cryptocurrency Bitcoin today climbed close to $72,000, extending its recent rally as investors reacted to regulatory developments in the United States and easing concerns about rising oil prices. Ethereum, XRP, and Solana all joined the rally, jumping over 3 to 5%.

Overall, the crypto market cap increased about 3% to roughly $2.43 trillion. While seeing a liquidation of $253 million in the last 24 hours. 

SEC and CFTC Cooperation Boosts Bitcoin Rally 

On a weekly basis, Bitcoin is now up roughly 6.5%, outperforming several traditional risk assets despite ongoing geopolitical tensions. Part of the market’s strength followed a regulatory announcement in Washington.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission said they will work together to develop a clearer regulatory framework for crypto markets.

Under the agreement, both agencies plan to coordinate policies and oversight for digital assets and other emerging technologies. The goal is to create a regulatory approach designed specifically for crypto markets.

The initiative aligns with broader policy goals promoted by Donald Trump, who has said he wants the United States to provide clearer rules for the digital asset sector.

Oil Market Moves Also Support Risk Assets

Another factor supporting the rally came from developments in global energy markets.

Scott Bessent said the U.S. Treasury would provide temporary authorization allowing countries to purchase Russian oil shipments that are currently stranded at sea.

The move aims to increase supply and stabilize energy markets after oil prices surged nearly 10% to about $100 per barrel earlier in the week.
