Last month, stablecoin monthly adjusted trading volume hit an all-time high. Some are dismissive of these figures, while the cryptocurrency Twitter community (CT) is jubilant.

But numbers alone don't tell the whole story. Equally important is the context in which this growth is occurring—who is using stablecoins, for what purposes, and whether usage patterns are changing. Allium generously gave us an early look at their latest report on stablecoin infrastructure, "Stablecoins: The Rise of New Payment Channels." This report is worth reading because its charts show that stablecoin usage is shifting from enabling low-cost cross-border remittances to supporting general business activities and inter-enterprise supplier payments.

Most of the current debate surrounding stablecoins centers on whether they are financial products (such as narrowbanks, government bond packs, yield instruments) or simply payment infrastructure.  Discussions about the future of stablecoins at the policy level are all based on the premise that stablecoins are primarily financial instruments. However, data in the report suggests otherwise. Recent stablecoin transaction activity is increasingly resembling a payment channel rather than a savings product.

This mirrors the development pattern of Automated Clearing House (ACH) networks: from replacing paper checks in payroll to becoming the backbone of infrastructure for general business, B2B payments, and consumer bill payments.
