Bitcoin Miners Are Capitulating

According to new on-chain data, the Bitcoin network is experiencing a sustained period of "miner capitulation" with a consistent drop in mining difficulty since November 2025.

Bitcoin difficulty has been consistently dropping since November, which likely means that miners are tapping out or switching to other kinds of business.

In the meantime, profitability is stagnant, and operators are unplugging their machines en masse.

The great unplug

The Bitcoin difficulty chart paints a stark picture of the exodus. Difficulty hit an all-time high of nearly 155 T in early November 2025. Since that peak, the metric has stepped down consistently, crashing to its current level of 141.67 T as of late January 2026.

Mining difficulty determines how hard it should be to find a block. When more miners join, it gets harder. When they leave, it gets easier. The stepped decline in the chart confirms that massive amounts of hashrate are being taken offline. Miners are "tapping out" since they are unable to justify the electricity costs of running their fleets.

In late October, miner profitability (hashprice) fell off a cliff. It dropped from ~$49/PH/s to ~$35/PH/s in a matter of days.

Despite the difficulty dropping, which should theoretically make it more profitable for the remaining miners, profitability has barely budged. It remains stuck in the $38–$40 range.

This creates a "profitability trap." The remaining miners are getting a larger slice of the pie, but the value of that pie is likely too low to make a difference.

Bitcoin’s sharp rallies mask a deeper bear market that could end in a brutal crash, as speculative optimism fades, corporate exposure grows riskier, and digital gold narratives unravel, according to longtime crypto critic Peter Schiff.

Economist and gold advocate Peter Schiff shared on social media platform X this week a series of posts criticizing bitcoin’s price behavior, recent market rallies, and corporate exposure tied to the crypto asset, while reinforcing his long-standing view that bitcoin represents a speculative excess rather than durable value.


“ Bear markets slide a slope of hope. That’s why the biggest daily moves in bear markets are usually up,” he said on Feb. 6. “Such sharp rallies create a false sense of optimism, keeping people in when they should be getting out.” Noting in another X post that “MSTR is up 25% today” and “ bitcoin is up 11%,” Schiff firmly advised:


“Sell the rip!”


In other posts shared Feb. 5, Schiff intensified his broader critique of BTC, writing: “The real story about bitcoin isn’t its 50% decline, but that the biggest financial mania in history is likely over. What’s most amazing is how the scheme’s promoters convinced the mainstream financial media, Wall Street banks, and elected government officials to embrace it.” He also questioned the durability of the downturn, stating:


“The amazing part about the bitcoin bear market is that the price is down almost 50% from its peak and there still hasn’t been a crash. There is no way this bear market will end without one.”


Schiff maintains that bitcoin is a speculative bubble backed by nothing, arguing it lacks the intrinsic value found in gold’s physical utility for electronics or jewelry. On-Chain Signals Point to a Healthy Reset
On-chain data shows a noticeable dip in overall profitability across the network. The percentage of Bitcoin supply sitting in profit has slipped from 75.3% to 66.9%, falling below the key 69.1% level. Historically, this zone tends to act as a “reset button”—shaking out weak hands and easing sell pressure as traders become less eager to exit at lower prices.
At the same time, long-term holders are sending a strong signal of confidence. As Long-Term Holder NUPL approaches the 0.60 level, seasoned investors typically stop distributing and begin accumulating again. In past cycles, this shift has often laid the groundwork for the next leg higher.
Technical Outlook: A Pause Before the Push
From a chart perspective, Bitcoin is trading within an ascending broadening wedge—a structure that supports volatility but still favors continuation to the upside. If BTC successfully reclaims the $90,000 psychological level, the next target comes in near $98,000.
That’s where the “pit stop” likely happens.
