According to Treasury, the targeted schemes systematically defrauded US businesses and generated nearly $800 million in 2024 for North Korea’s weapons programs. Secretary Scott Bessent described a model in which overseas operatives used fake identities and corporate deception to infiltrate legitimate companies, then turned sensitive access into a second layer of leverage. “Targets American companies through deceptive schemes.” “Treasury will continue to follow the money.”

That framing matters because the case was not presented as a conventional cybercrime story alone. Treasury and Chainalysis both pointed to a blended playbook: fraudulent hiring, wage extraction, financial facilitators, and crypto rails used to convert and move proceeds. Chainalysis called the operations “a sophisticated and growing threat.” It added, in equally direct terms, that “cryptocurrency plays a central role” in moving those funds back to North Korea while evading sanctions.

The clearest crypto-specific detail in the action concerned Nguyen Quang Viet, CEO of Vietnam-based Quangvietdnbg International Services Company Limited. Treasury said Nguyen converted about $2.5 million into cryptocurrency for North Koreans between mid-2023 and mid-2025, including illicit earnings tied to Amnokgang Technology Development Company, a DPRK IT company that manages overseas worker delegations. If it doesn't, the price will continue to fall; conversely, a rebound is possible after this decline. My suggestion is to first look for opportunities to rise based on the middle band support.

The strategy is to look for opportunities to rise within the 70400-70000 range, with a target of 71500. Liquidity is relatively weak over the weekend, so I'm not looking too far ahead.

Eskom, a South African electricity public utility,  is exploring plans to sell excess daytime electricity to Bitcoin mining companies as rooftop solar installations reduce grid demand during daylight hours.

Speaking at the Biznews Conference 2026 in Hermanus, Eskom chairman Mteto Nyati said the utility is evaluating ways to monetize surplus power generated during the middle of the day, according to local reporting.

South Africa’s rapid adoption of rooftop solar systems has begun to reshape the country’s electricity demand profile. Many households and businesses now generate their own power during daylight hours, leaving Eskom with unused capacity once solar panels begin producing electricity.

Nyati said the pattern is increasingly predictable.

Demand spikes in the early morning as households prepare for work and businesses open. As solar generation ramps up later in the day, grid demand falls, leaving Eskom with surplus electricity.

Eskom is looking at creative ways and means of using that capacity. One option under review is offering discounted electricity to Bitcoin mining companies operating in South Africa. The sector runs large data centers that perform energy-intensive computations to secure the Bitcoin network.

Nyati said industries such as Bitcoin mining are contributing to rising global electricity demand. He said that the technology did not exist two decades ago but now represents a growing source of power consumption.

Selling excess electricity to miners could allow Eskom to generate revenue from power that might otherwise go unused during solar-heavy hours.
