Bitcoin traded lower after January producer inflation came in above consensus. That sets up a longer stretch in which rate expectations may steer crypto pricing ahead of the next producer price index (PPI) print on March 18.

January PPI inflation was 2.9% year over year, above the 2.6% consensus estimate. Core PPI (excluding food and energy) at 3.6% year over year versus 3.0% consensus.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the PPI for final demand rose 0.5% month over month on a seasonally adjusted basis and 2.9% year over year on an unadjusted basis.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved a new set of generic listing standards for commodity-based trust shares on Nasdaq, Cboe, and the New York Stock Exchange.

The move is expected to streamline the approval process for exchange-traded products (ETPs) tied to digital assets, according to Fox Business reporter Eleanor Terret.

However, she added that the Generic Listing Standards don’t open up every type of crypto ETP because threshold requirements remain in place, meaning not all products will immediately qualify.

To add context, she quoted Tushar Jain of Multicoin Capital, who noted that the standards don’t apply to every type of crypto ETP and that threshold requirements remain. He expects the SEC will iterate further on these standards.

The order, issued on Sept. 17, grants accelerated approval of proposed rule changes filed by the exchanges. By adopting the standards, the SEC aims to shorten the time it takes to bring new commodity-based ETPs to market, potentially clearing a path for broader crypto investment products.

The regulator has been delaying the decision on several altcoin ETFs, most of which are set to reach their final deadlines in October. The move was rumored to be the SEC's way of expediting .

Brent crude oil is trading like a geopolitical asset again, and that is forcing Bitcoin back into a macro test it has not fully resolved.

For a third straight session, oil climbed as the widening US-Israel conflict with Iran revived fears of disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow maritime chokepoint that handles roughly a fifth of global oil consumption flows and significant LNG traffic.

According to data from Oilprice.com, Brent rose more than $3 to around $80.9 a barrel after topping $82 intraday, its highest level since January 2025, while WTI hovered near $73.8.

At the same time, the New York Fed conducted $3.0 billion in overnight repos backed by Treasury collateral on March 2, temporarily adding reserves to the banking system. Overnight reverse repos that day totaled $0.627 billion, producing a net effect of about +$2.373 billion in temporary reserve support.

Those two developments, a renewed oil shock and a small but closely watched reserve injection, are colliding in Bitcoin.

This resulted in a net decrease of around 800 BTC for the month. Even if there had been no sales in February, the net additions would still have paled in comparison to previous months, such as January and December, which saw gains of 41,000 BTC and 29,000 BTC, respectively. Additionally, the report analyzed the dollar value of public companies’ holdings, which fell from $102 billion in January to $78 billion in February, reflecting Bitcoin’s downtrend experienced during the month. Despite this downturn, there is a glimmer of hope, as the report indicates that public treasuries added an estimated 62,000 BTC so far in the current quarter, primarily driven by Strategy’s activities.
