Trading veteran Todd Horwitz is warning that the United States economy could be heading toward a severe downturn reminiscent of the 2008 financial crisis as economic pressures build beneath seemingly stable financial markets.

His concerns come as recent data showed the U.S. economy expanding at a much slower pace than expected, he said in an interview with David Lin published on March 13.

Notably, gross domestic product grew at an annualized rate of just 0.7% in the fourth quarter, sharply lower than the earlier estimate of 1.4% and well below market expectations.

Despite the weak reading, markets barely reacted. To this end, Horwitz said this reflects how modern markets function, with large institutions closely tracking the indicators behind data such as GDP and jobs figures, meaning much of the information is already priced in before the official release.

While markets may appear stable, the trader argued that the broader economic reality is far more troubling, especially for most Americans.

Rising household financial pressure

He said household financial pressure is rising as debt continues to grow, with many consumers increasingly relying on credit and deferred-payment financing to sustain spending.

At the same time, mortgage delinquencies remain a concern, and borrowing costs have stayed elevated. Horwitz also pointed to signs of overbuilding in several sectors of the economy, which could exacerbate financial stress if conditions deteriorate.

He further warned that the banking system may be vulnerable due to excessive leverage, a dynamic that historically amplifies financial shocks during downturns.

Boris Johnson slams Bitcoin as ‘Ponzi scheme,' triggers community backlash

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson believes that while there is a limited use case for cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin is a ‘giant Ponzi scheme.’ 

Citing his old friend who reportedly lost £20,000 on BTC, Johnson wrote, 

The more elderly people get ripped off – in the name of Bitcoin – the faster that disillusion will set in.

The former PM somewhat agreed with crypto supporters’ strong fixation on ‘decentralization’ to keep BTC away from government devaluation and interference. 

However, he wonders how investors who lose money in crypto, like his friend, can be made whole again if there is no central authority to sue or hold accountable for the damage or hack. 

For him, the anonymous ‘Japanese’ Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto can’t be traced, verified, or held responsible for the losses. Hence, the whole Bitcoin idea is merely a ‘collective belief’ among crypto supporters, according to Johnson.

He posed, 

What happens when that belief melts away? I’ve long suspected Bitcoin is a giant Ponzi scheme, and now I’m hearing tales of woe that make me fear I’m right.

Billionaire hedge fund manager Stan Druckenmiller, once a Bitcoin holder, has predicted the possibility of crypto replacing the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency in the future.

In a recent interview, Stanley Druckenmiller questioned whether the U.S. dollar can retain its highly sought-after status half a century from now.

“I doubt the US dollar will be the reserve currency in 50 years, but I don’t have a clue what would be. Maybe some crypto thing I hate,” he stated. 

Druckenmiller also raised concerns about the current financial markets, highlighting excessive asset inflation as his primary worry for the year.

Speaking recently during Morgan Stanley’s Hard Lessons series, the famed investor downplayed fears of liquidity crises or policy missteps, instead pointing to ‘narrative-driven bubbles’ as the biggest threat to the economy. 

“I have never seen, and I’ve studied a lot of economic history, a really bad economic outcome—something much worse than a garden variety recession… without an asset bubble,” Druckenmiller opined. “They’re all preceded by asset bubbles. So, if you really, really want to cause a big problem… create an asset bubble.”

When asked whether the market is in the early phase of such a bubble, Druckenmiller warned that the cycle is already well underway. “Maybe eighth inning,” he said. “If we went materially from here, I’d be very concerned.”

For years, Druckenmiller steered clear of crypto, famously calling it a ‘solution in search of a problem.

In November 2020, amid the Federal Reserve’s multi-trillion-dollar pandemic stimulus, Druckenmiller disclosed that he had purchased Bitcoin as a hedge against fiat currency debasement.

On-chain analysts at Lookonchain reported that Buterin sold 493 Ethereum (ETH), worth roughly $1.16 million at the time of the transaction.

The wallet, believed to be linked to Buterin, executed several sell-related transactions. The first sale involved 211.84 ETH. Shortly after, the wallet transferred $500,000 in USDC to Kanro, a biotech charity founded by Buterin in 2023. The organization focuses on research related to COVID and future pandemics.
