Bitcoin reached $76,000 intraday on March 16th, marking its highest level in six weeks after eight consecutive days of gains, with a 24-hour increase of nearly 4%. This price level is approaching a significant resistance zone that has existed since late January. Since the outbreak of the Iraq War on February 28th, Bitcoin has risen by nearly 20%, while gold has fallen by about 3% and the S&P 500 index has fallen by about 2% during the same period. Bitcoin's relative performance has outperformed almost all mainstream assets.

Regarding liquidation data, according to Coinglass, $610 million in open interest was liquidated in the past 24 hours, with short positions accounting for $485 million.  Data from Alternative.me shows that the market has shifted from a state of "extreme fear" to "fear," with the cryptocurrency fear and greed index rising to 28 today (compared to 23, indicating "extreme fear," yesterday).


On March 16, all three major indices closed higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 387.94 points to close at 46,946, a gain of 0.83%; the S&P 500 rose 1.01% to 6,699; and the Nasdaq rose 1.22% to close at 22,374. The improved market sentiment was mainly due to easing geopolitical risks. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC that the US was allowing Iranian oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first time tankers had successfully passed since the conflict began.

I. Geopolitics and the Oil Market

The situation in the Middle East (Israel, Iran, and the Strait of Hormuz) remains the core macroeconomic variable. After significant fluctuations, oil prices have stabilized around $100. The mainstream market expectation is that the current conflict is likely to ease temporarily within 2-6 weeks, and a ceasefire agreement is highly probable. With the VIX (Volatility Index) declining, market risk appetite is gradually recovering.

II. Economic Data and Concerns of Stagflation

The US GDP growth rate slowed more than expected to 0.7% last quarter, mainly dragged down by weak exports, real estate investment, and personal consumption expenditure (PCE). Coupled with recent weak retail data, the signal of cooling economic momentum is clear.

Although rising oil prices and economic slowdown have raised concerns about stagflation, considering that the US has become a net oil exporter and that long-term inflation expectations are stable at around 3%, the probability of substantial stagflation remains low.

In crypto, timing can make or break a project and can decide whether a new launch succeeds or fails. Many in the NFT community expected the 30th of March to be the launch day of OpenSea’s long-awaited $SEA token.

However, OpenSea CEO Devin Finzer has delayed the launch, saying,

Market conditions are challenging across crypto right now, and $SEA only launches once.

The reason behind the $SEA token delay

Elaborating on the issue, Finzer took to X and noted,

@openseafdn is pushing back the timeline. a delay is a delay. i’m not going to dress it up, and i know how it lands.

Instead of rushing the launch during a weak market, OpenSea is taking several steps to keep users engaged.

First, the platform will cut trading fees to 0% for 60 days starting on the 31st of March. This move aims to boost activity and attract users to its mobile app and perpetual Futures platform.

Second, OpenSea is offering fee refunds to users who traded during Rewards Waves 3 to 6. However, users who claim the refund must give up the “Treasures” points they earned.

Third, OpenSea will end the “Waves” rewards system. Instead, the company plans to move away from constant point-farming campaigns and follow a clearer timeline set by the OpenSea Foundation.

Standing in support of Finzer, Adam Hollander, CMO of OpenSea, added,

I’ve been a CEO before. the hardest decisions are those which are painful in the short-term and require deep conviction in your vision...there aren’t many CEOs who, when presented with the same situation, would decide to give back millions rebuild trust with their users.

That said, OpenSea’s decision to delay the $SEA token is closely linked to the current state of the NFT market. The industry has matured, but it has also become much smaller and less liquid compared to the 2021 boom.
