South Korea has started laying the groundwork for a new tracking system designed to impose taxes on profits from cryptocurrency investments.

An AI Crypto Tracking System
According to The Korea Times, the National Tax Service (NTS) announced this Thursday that they are moving ahead with an AI-driven system to track crypto investment gains as they prepare to start taxing virtual asset profits from January 2027. The NTS said that the system “is expected to serve our goal of collecting individuals’ virtual asset transaction data starting in 2027”.

A $2 Million Project
In order to achieve this, the NTS issued a tender for what they call a “Comprehensive System for Virtual Asset Transaction Analysis”. There, they detailed that the project has a budget of around ₩3 billion ($2 million) and that the designing of the system will start in April. A pilot operation for the system should be ready to begin in November, after passing multiple tests runs, and be ready to fully launch between November and December.

The notice was uploaded to an online bidding system run by the Public Procurement Service, the agency in charge of sourcing goods and services for the government and affiliated bodies. A winning contractor is expected to be chosen and signed within this month.

A New Era Of Crypto Surveillance
With this new system, the NTS plans to aggregate data from domestic exchanges, blockchain analytics and existing tax databases, leveraging AI and machine learning to detect unusual patterns and potential tax evasion.

This recent update follows past January NTS’s unveiling of a new “control tower” unit created under the 2026 National Tax Administration Operation Plan to coordinate all virtual‐asset tax enforcement and monitoring of offshore flows.

Matt Hougan, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Bitwise, has predicted that the flagship crypto asset could reach the $1 million milestone, a forecast akin to several predictions from major corporate firms.

As reported by Milk Road, a macro analyst and crypto investor, the Bitwise CIO made this audacious forecast in a recently published memo. In the memo, the $1 million per Bitcoin estimate is far from the kind of inflated “moonboy” forecast frequently associated with cryptocurrency mania.

According to Hougan, this thesis is a simple math rather than a moonboy take. The executive claims that most people are getting this thesis wrong by evaluating BTC against a static market. In a market that has been compounding for 20 years, applying a static value is likely to be unsuccessful. However, because the market is weak, most participants are content to do so at the moment.

Instead of characterizing the goal as speculative optimism, Hougan describes how the flow of capital into Bitcoin is gradually changing its long-term perspective. Currently, there is around $38 trillion in the global store-of-value market, which is the pool of money invested in hard assets like gold and real estate with the express purpose of preserving wealth.

Every bear market has seen Bitcoin rally back to the 200 day moving average after the first major pullback well below the 200dma. In 2018, BTC rallied from $6.5K at the end of March to $10K in early May (5 weeks). In 2022, it rallied from $34K at the end of Jan to $48K at the end of Mar (8 weeks).

With BTC pulling back to $60K on Feb 5th this year, if it followed the same pattern and adjusting for the 200 day moving average declining as we sit below it, that would equate to just around $90K by the end of March 2026 (in that 5-8 week range). It also lines up with key horizontal resistance levels in the high 80s/low 90s.

A lot of people are heavily in cash right now and if we start to see momentum we could get back to $90K by end of month, a lot faster than people are modeling. It's an especially strong signal how well crypto has performed both during the initial Iran escalation and during the spike in oil prices, much better than equities and signaling sellers are exhausted.
