one-month high of $73,800, continuing to outperform since start of Iran war

Bitcoin $BTC$71,859.13 is adding to overnight gains in early U.S. trading on Friday, continuing to show strong relative price action after many months of underperformance to assets like stocks and precious metals.

Trading at $73,800, bitcoin is higher by nearly 5% over the past 24 hours, with most of those gains coming after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday evening said the Trump administration is taking concrete steps to try and cap surging oil prices.

Bitcoin is now higher by about 11% since the Iran war broke out, outperforming broad U.S. stock indices and gold, both of which have lost ground since the bombs began dropping about two weeks ago.

WTI oil on Friday is trading at $94.50 per barrel, down from a high of nearly $98 on Thursday. U.S. stocks are posting gains of about 0.5%.

Oil raises stagflationary risk

The recent spike in oil prices is putting direct pressure on household budgets and, if sustained, could weaken consumer spending and slow economic growth, according to Olu Sonola, head of US economics at Fitch Ratings.

"Yes, the broader economy is still expected to grow at trend, but that forecast increasingly looks fragile as downside risks accumulate.... The Fed can shrug off pockets of weakening growth, but resurgent inflation severely limits its room to maneuver, leaving policy potentially stranded for months," he wrote in a note.

Dogecoin Spot ETFs Record Zero Net Inflows Over 24 Hours Despite 7% Spot Market Rally

Major cryptocurrencies extended their gains on Friday, with Dogecoin rising as much as 7%. Dogecoin saw a significant rise on Friday, increasing from $0.094 to $0.1004. The rise builds on a prior-day rebound from a low of $0.091 and continues the broader recovery from a March 8 low of $0.086.

At the time of writing, DOGE was up 5.33% in the last 24 hours to $0.998 and up 7.22% weekly. The crypto market is extending a stretch of consolidation, with the total value near $2.45 trillion for a third straight session, reflecting a market that has been stuck in a tight band since the sharp sell-off in late January.

The continuing market sentiment has bled into spot ETFs with Dogecoin spot ETFs, which have recorded zero inflows since the start of March.

In the last 24 hours, zero inflows have been recorded in Dogecoin ETFs, a trend that has been ongoing since March 3. According to Sosovalue data, the trio of Dogecoin ETFs, Grayscale, 21shares and Bitwise saw $0 in daily net inflows within the last 24 hours. Dogecoin ETFs still saw a bit of trading, with total value traded ranging between $212,460 and $1.02 million since this date.

Analysts suggest the current phase on the market is more of a stabilization than breakout. While some on-chain metrics are improving, a sustained bull run would likely require a fresh inflow of capital, among other things.

Until a clear macro catalyst or wave of new capital arrives, the market might continue to consolidate near the upper end of its range rather than seek a breakout.

The cumulative total net inflow for Dogecoin ETFs remains steady at $7.45 million, while total net assets equaled $9.27 million, according to SoSoValue data.

In a statement from his X account, Buterin said that his $500 million donation to FLI in 2021 was used for political advocacy, deviating from the initially proposed technical roadmap.

“In 2021, I bought a large amount of $SHIB and other Dogecoins because the creators used the phrase “we own half of our Vitalik supply” as a marketing tactic and wanted to be “the next Dogecoin.”

I felt that this was definitely a bubble, that it would burst quickly and the price would drop drastically, so I sold as much as I could in $ETH and donated it. I sent half to Crypto Relief and the other half to FLI.

…However, the situation has changed significantly since 2021, and its political aspects have emerged….”

Buterin stated that he had initially thought his $SHIB donation to FLI would generate a profit of around $10-25 million, but they had managed to achieve a profit of approximately $500 million.

Rumors are circulating that the exchange is actively opposing the proposed Bitcoin (BTC) de minimis tax exemption, allegedly to promote a regulatory framework that favors stablecoins over Bitcoin.

Coinbase’s Alleged Lobbying
As the US government seeks to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for the crypto industry—especially following Donald Trump’s re-election campaign—tax exemptions have become a focal point in congressional discussions.

In a March 4 interview, Senator Cynthia Lummis mentioned that both the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee are contemplating a $300 exemption, which would allow crypto users to utilize Bitcoin for transactions without incurring capital gains taxes.

“We’re trying to figure out the appropriate criteria for distinguishing when a transaction—such as a sale of Bitcoin—should be subject to capital gains taxes and when it can be used as a straightforward medium of exchange, akin to the US dollar,” explained Lummis.

However, industry insights shared by Marty Bent, managing partner at Ten31, indicate that Coinbase may be lobbying against such exemptions. Bent claimed on social media that the exchange is attempting to “nuke” the Bitcoin exemption while seeking to support stablecoins exclusively.

Allegedly, Coinbase representatives have informed legislators that “No one is using Bitcoin as money. A de minimis exemption for Bitcoin is a handout that will be DOA [dead on arrival].”
