Bitcoin's Supply on Exchanges Drops to Lowest Level Since 2017

According to new on-chain data, the amount of Bitcoin held on cryptocurrency exchanges has plummeted to its lowest level since late 2017.

The yellow trendline tracks the percentage of Bitcoin's total circulating supply sitting in known exchange wallets.

After peaking in early 2020, this metric has been in a relentless macro downtrend.

Investors have spent the last six years consistently pulling their assets offline.

A dotted horizontal line on the chart traces the current supply ratio all the way back to November 2017.

The fact that exchange supplies are at an eight-year low can be attributed to several factors.

Following the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2024 and expanding institutional adoption, massive amounts of Bitcoin are now being scooped up and locked away in enterprise-grade custody solutions (like Coinbase Prime or Fidelity).

The exchanges like FTX and Celsius also strengthened the "not your keys, not your coins" ethos. Retail investors and whales alike are increasingly moving their holdings to cold storage hardware wallets.

Altseason is dead, expect shorter cycles and ‘violent’ rotations: Crypto exec

Traditional altcoin cycles, which featured broad market rallies called “altseason,” are now a relic of the past as new crypto market dynamics set in, according to Andrei Grachev, Managing Partner of DWF Labs, a crypto market maker and investment firm.

Too many tokens competing for limited capital and mindshare, a smaller number of market participants, and crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) altering market dynamics by trapping liquidity are driving factors of the disruption, Grachev told Cointelegraph.

An institutional focus on large-cap digital assets like Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH) and tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) is also diverting capital and attention away from altcoins, he said.

“The long tail of tokens will still exist, but will largely function as high-risk venture or casino-style plays. The capital is not going to keep expanding fast enough to support all of it,” Grachev said. He added:

“That means shorter narrative windows, more violent rotations, and less room for weak projects to survive on hype alone. The market is moving away from broad altcoin rallies and toward more selective moves in specific sectors.”

Matt Hougan, the chief investment officer at investment firm Bitwise, also said traditional altcoin cycles are over, and that institutional investors are focused on yield-bearing digital instruments or crypto assets that capture revenue.

The Ethereum Foundation has completed an over-the-counter sale of 5,000 Ether to BitMine Immersion Technologies for about $10.2 million. The transaction was priced at $2,042.96 per ETH, based on the figures disclosed by the foundation. The organization said it will use the proceeds to fund operations, research, ecosystem development, and community grants.

Ethereum Foundation's Second Direct Corporate ETH Sale

The Ethereum Foundation disclosed the transaction in a post published on Saturday. It said the transfer will be made from an Ethereum Foundation Safe multisignature wallet. The foundation also stated that the funds from the transaction will support protocol research and development, ecosystem growth initiatives, and grant programs.

The sale marks the second time the Ethereum Foundation has sold ETH directly to a corporate treasury buyer through an OTC transaction. In July 2025, the foundation sold 10,000 ETH to SharpLink Gaming at an average price of $2,572.37 per token. This earlier transaction was valued at about $25.7 million.

The foundation linked both transactions to its treasury management framework introduced in June 2025. Under that framework, the organization converts part of its ETH holdings into fiat or fiat-like assets to support operating needs. The policy targets annual spending of about 15% of treasury holdings while maintaining a multi-year operating runway.

The latest sale followed the foundation’s recent move to stake part of its treasury. The organization has said it plans to deploy about 70,000 ETH into validators using open-source infrastructure. The initiative forms part of its broader treasury and operational
