Now, a bearish chart pattern has appeared just as capital locked on the network jumps nearly 50%, creating a rare clash between improving fundamentals and weakening price action.

Bearish Breakdown Appears Even as Network Capital Expands

The project in question is Hedera, with a native token named $HBAR.

Recently, $HBAR slipped below the neckline of a head-and-shoulders pattern, a technical formation that often signals trend reversals. This breakdown occurred on March 7 and immediately exposed the asset to further downside risk.

What makes the move unusual is that the weakness appeared just as Hedera’s network metrics improved sharply.

According to DeFiLlama data, the network’s Total Value Locked (TVL)—the total value of assets deposited in decentralized applications—has climbed from roughly $38.6 million on February 16 to about $60.4 million at press time. That represents over a 50% increase in just a few weeks for this Made in USA project.

Normally, rising TVL suggests growing network usage and stronger investor confidence. More capital entering decentralized applications usually supports the price of the underlying token.

This week has been a reminder that the crypto market is deeply connected to global macro events.
As tensions in the Middle East continue, markets have started to price in the possibility of a ceasefire. A recent post from Donald Trump on Truth Social demanded “unconditional surrender” from Iran, signaling that any ceasefire could be delayed. However, historically similar statements were followed by a ceasefire within days, leading some analysts to speculate that a potential agreement could arrive around March 12.
At the same time, oil prices are skyrocketing. U.S. oil has surged +34.5% this week, marking the largest weekly gain since 1982. Rising oil prices bring stronger inflationary pressure and increase the economic cost of ongoing conflicts, which could further push global leaders toward negotiating a ceasefire.
Earlier this week, the crypto market reacted strongly. Nearly $150 billion flowed into the market, pushing prices higher as investors looked for alternative assets during geopolitical uncertainty. Bitcoin once again appeared to act as a hedge against global instability.
But the momentum didn’t last.
By the end of the week, inflows slowed sharply, leaving the market with only $50 billion in net gains. This means roughly 67% of the earlier gains were wiped out, highlighting just how fragile sentiment currently is.
This raises a key question for investors:
Was Bitcoin’s breakout above $70K driven by true hedge demand, or was it simply speculative momentum?
If a ceasefire is confirmed, improving risk sentiment could bring fresh confidence back into crypto markets and potentially reignite bullish momentum.
However, if the conflict continues and oil prices keep climbing, capital may rotate toward traditional safe havens like gold, which could weaken Bitcoin’s hedge narrative and make it harder for BTC to push beyond the $70K level.
For now, the crypto market remains caught between geopolitics, inflation pressure, and shifting investor sentiment.

Refusing new IRS crypto tax forms could cost you your exchange account

Log in to Coinbase next tax season, and your tax documents might no longer arrive by mail.

Under a new IRS proposal, crypto exchanges could be required to file Form 1099-DA electronically. This form reports digital asset trades, and could refuse to do business with customers who decline to provide it.

The comment period closes May 5, and if finalized, the rule would shift crypto tax reporting from the mailbox to the platform.

This is not a tax cut or a rollback of reporting requirements. Brokers still send identical information to the IRS regardless of how they deliver forms to customers. The proposal permits exchanges to make app-based delivery mandatory.

The result: millions of crypto users would receive tax forms exclusively through email and in-app document centers, with no paper backup and no right to switch back.

The twist: crypto taxes are not getting lighter. They are getting quieter.

What actually changes

The IRS proposal creates an alternative electronic delivery process for Form 1099-DA.

Under current rules, brokers must offer customers paper forms. The proposal would allow exchanges to use streamlined consent, where customers agree to electronic delivery during account setup, and exchanges could terminate relationships with anyone who refuses.

Consent would likely appear as a pop-up with an “I agree” button, with language indicating the broker may not continue servicing customers who decline.

Once customers consent, exchanges would not be required to let them withdraw that consent while remaining customers. The only guaranteed paper fallback would be a notice if email delivery fails, not the full tax document.

Tokenized real-world assets, excluding stablecoins, have crossed $25 billion in onchain value, nearly quadrupling from roughly $6.4 billion a year earlier, according to data from RWA.xyz

The milestone, and continued growth, as RWAs hit the $20 billion mark at the end of 2025, continues a shift from early experimentation toward institutional-scale deployment. Asset managers, including BlackRock, Fidelity, and WisdomTree, have launched tokenized fund products over the past year, while the number of tokenized U.S. Treasury offerings alone expanded from 35 to over 50, according to data compiled by Nexus Data Labs.

The Ethereum ecosystem is showing signs of a structural shift as the asset successfully reclaimed the $2,100 price level this week. A decisive daily close above the $2,260 resistance level could signal a broader trend reversal, potentially opening a path toward the $2,500 mark. On the downside, the $1,850 to $1,900 area remains the primary support band that bulls must defend to maintain the current momentum.

What makes this recent price action notable is the behavior of institutional-sized wallets. Recent reports indicate that several high-profile addresses have swapped significant amounts of Bitcoin for Ethereum, totaling over $16 million in a single transaction. Furthermore, one prominent whale was observed borrowing $36 million in USDT to purchase an additional 17,000 ETH at an average price of $2,083. 

This type of leveraged positioning by “smart money” often suggests a high degree of confidence that the local bottom has been established. Additionally, exchange reserves for ETH continue to decline, meaning more tokens are being moved into private custody or staked in DeFi protocols, effectively reducing the immediate selling pressure on the market

AI Agent Went Off-Script, Set Up a Hidden Tunnel, and Mined Crypto

An artificial intelligence (AI) agent autonomously bypassed security controls to mine cryptocurrency during a routine training exercise, according to a research paper. The paper was published by an Alibaba-linked research team.

The researchers designed the model, known as ROME, to test an AI agent’s ability to independently navigate complex, multi-step tasks.

During the exercise, the researchers observed unexpected behavior. The agent established a reverse secure shell (SSH) tunnel to external servers, effectively creating a concealed connection from inside the system.

The move allowed the model to bypass Alibaba Cloud firewall protections and redirect graphics processing unit resources toward cryptocurrency mining.

“We also observed the unauthorized repurposing of provisioned GPU capacity for cryptocurrency mining, quietly diverting compute away from training, inflating operational costs, and introducing clear legal and reputational exposure,” the paper stated.

According to the researchers, this behavior was unanticipated and emerged without any explicit instruction, prompt injection, or external jailbreak.

The findings highlight continuing concerns about the operational safety of autonomous AI systems.

The researchers concluded that current models remain “markedly underdeveloped in safety, security, and controllability,” conditions they said limit the technology’s readiness for broader deployment in real-world environments.

The team has since implemented tighter restrictions and a safety-focused data filtering system to prevent similar breaches.

Meanwhile, the discovery has sparked significant interest within the crypto community.

Canton’s Yuval Rooz says smart contract blockchains face a reckoning over value gap
Yuval Rooz has a blunt message for the smart contract sector: If you claim to be the future plumbing of global finance, you’d better show the cash flow.

“People have assigned a lot of value to these networks based on what they say they’ll become,” said Rooz, CEO of Digital Asset and co-founder of the Canton Network. “But when you look at how much actual business they’re doing, there’s a massive disconnect.”

The Canton Network is a privacy-enabled blockchain infrastructure that aims to connect financial institutions and their tokenized assets across interoperable, permissioned applications.

“The issue isn’t about any single chain. Many smart contract networks were architected for retail speculation and token trading, not for regulated, institutional financial workflows," Rooz told CoinDesk in an interview.

"When you look at metrics like sustained economic throughput, recurring revenue, and real-world asset activity, there’s often a disconnect between valuation and actual financial usage. Building infrastructure for global institutions requires a very different design philosophy around privacy, compliance, and interoperability," he said.

Rooz, who previously worked at DRW and Citadel before founding Canton, said he isn’t anti-crypto. He drew a distinction between assets like bitcoin BTC$67,694.16, which the market values as a store of value or digital gold, and smart contract platforms that promise to transform financial infrastructure.

“Gold and silver have value because the market assigns it to them,” according to Rooz. “Bitcoin is an asset class. But smart contract networks pitch themselves as the next set of financial rails. If that’s the pitch, then financial institutions should be using them at scale.”

In his view, most aren’t.
