Memecoins outpace bitcoin, ether as 'barbell strategy' wins out

Even as bitcoin $BTC$73,608.52 rallies, non-serious tokens such as memecoins are emerging as the biggest winners.

Among the majors, bitcoin jumped more than 2% in 24 hours, and at one point early Monday briefly topped $74,300 for the first time since early February. Other tokens including $XRP ($XRP) and solana (SOL) gained over 4%, and ether ($ETH) rose 7%. The CoinDesk 20 Index added nearly 4%.

But the top-performing token among the top 100 over the past 24 hours is the memecoin PEPE, which has surged 19%. Its compatriots BONK and PENGU are up over 10%, and SHIB also outpaced ether’s 7% rise. In fact, five of the day’s best-performing coins are meme tokens.

This illustrates a trend observed since 2023–24. Observers have dubbed it the “barbell strategy:” holding a serious token like bitcoin, with growing institutional adoption, on one end, while speculating in smaller, non-serious coins such as memecoins on the other.

The behavior contrasts with the previous bull market, when $BTC rallies tended to lift more productive sectors of the market, such as DeFi and play-to-earn projects.

One possible reason for the absence of a so-called “meaningful alt season” is the flood of new altcoins, which has spread demand across thousands of projects. CoinMarketCap data show the total number of tokens has surpassed 37.8 million in just three years, highlighting the massive influx of new projects.

Some observers are pinning hopes on the Clarity Act in the U.S. to reinvigorate the broader market. Others caution that time is running short for decisive regulatory action.

Artificial intelligence-linked cryptocurrencies extended their surge Monday after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang laid out the company’s vision for the next phase of AI infrastructure during his keynote at Nvidia’s GTC developer conference.

Among the big movers were AI-focused blockchain NEAR$1.5020, climbing more than 10% over the past 24 hours, reaching its strongest level since late January. Decentralized AI project Artificial Superintelligence Alliance’s FET token surged as much as 20% intraday before trimming gains later in the session.

Meanwhile WLD$0.4027 — the identity-focused crypto project co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman — rose about 10%, trading near $0.40, its strongest level since early March. Grass (GRASS), a decentralized network that lets users monetize unused internet bandwidth to train AI models, surged 13% to fresh 2026 highs.

The moves came as Huang reinforced in his speech Nvidia’s central role in the global AI boom. During the keynote, he said the company expects roughly $1 trillion worth of chip demand backlog through 2027, with hyperscale cloud providers accounting for about 60% of its business.

Huang also highlighted the rapid rise of agentic AI systems, praising the viral OpenClaw project that has gained traction among developers in recent weeks. He said that Nvidia worked to adapt the system into an enterprise-ready version called NemoClaw, designed to make autonomous AI agents safer for corporate use without exposing sensitive data.

While Huang did not reference crypto during the speech, a growing number of blockchain projects are betting that the next wave of AI agents will rely on crypto rails to transact and coordinate autonomously. Michael Saylor never misses a chance to talk about his firm, Strategy. In his latest post on X, he once again highlighted the company’s long-term plan of continuously buying Bitcoin [BTC].

He said,

Saylor even added a chart highlighting the company’s Bitcoin purchases over several years, hinting that the buying is far from over. For context, every orange dot in the chart represents one Bitcoin purchase made by Strategy.

Strategy’s Bitcoin buying spree

So far, there have been 102 purchase events by mid-March 2026. The orange line shows how Bitcoin’s price has moved over time, while a green dashed line shows Strategy’s average buying price, which is around $75,863.

When Saylor says “stretch the orange dots,” he means people should zoom out and look at the bigger picture instead of focusing on short-term price changes.

That said, Strategy currently holds 738,731 BTC, which is about 3.5% of Bitcoin’s total supply of 21 million coins. With Bitcoin trading near $73,000, the message suggests that Strategy may continue buying more Bitcoin and adding more “orange dots” in the future.

Analysts are divided

Needless to say, the company’s strategy is not only based on spare cash. According to analyst Lark Davis, Strategy has created a financial loop to keep buying Bitcoin.

It raises money by selling new shares or issuing convertible debt, and then uses that money to buy more BTC. In simple terms, it turns its stock into a tool to accumulate Bitcoin.

Remarking on which, Davis added,

It only works if Bitcoin keeps going up. Which means it’s either the greatest trade in history... or the most transparent gamble ever run.

Investors appear to support this strategy, as the company’s stock MSTR recently rose to about $139.67, showing confidence in its Bitcoin-focused approach.
