Aave Liquidation Shock: $27M Wiped Out After wstETH Oracle Glitch

A sudden liquidation cascade has shaken the DeFi lending giant Aave, wiping out roughly $27 million in positions within 24 hours. The event appears to have been triggered by a temporary pricing mismatch involving wstETH, the liquid staking token from Lido, according to reports and on-chain analysis.

What Actually Happened?

The incident began when Aave’s risk-control oracle briefly undervalued wstETH relative to its market price. Because lending protocols rely on oracle data to determine collateral value, the lower price made some users’ positions appear riskier than they actually were.

Once those positions fell below the safety threshold, Aave’s liquidation engine automatically closed them. This triggered a chain reaction of liquidations across the platform, wiping out tens of millions in leveraged positions within hours.

Why the Glitch Occurred

Risk firm Chaos Labs later clarified that the core market oracle itself was accurate. Instead, the issue came from the CAPO risk oracle configuration, which limits how quickly yield-bearing assets can rise in value.

Chaos Labs explained that a mismatch in stored smart-contract parameters, including an outdated exchange rate reference and timestamp, caused the system to temporarily undervalue wstETH by about 2.85%.

The firm summarized the issue, saying a “misconfiguration on Aave’s CAPO oracle caused wstETH E-Mode liquidations,” adding that no bad debt was incurred by the protocol.

Will Liquidated Users Be Reimbursed?

Despite the scale of the event, Aave itself did not suffer bad debt. Liquidators stepped in to close positions and earned about 499 ETH in liquidation incentives.

A Lido contributor confirmed that the problem was unrelated to the token itself, stating the liquidations were due to “an incorrect wstETH price reported by this oracle mechanism,” while emphasizing that the Lido protocol and wstETH continue to

The largest cryptocurrency dropped 0.55% since midnight UTC, a loss dwarfed by several altcoins, with zcash (ZEC) and aave AAVE$109.98 falling by 4.5% and 2.1%, respectively.

Gold and the dollar are little changed, while U.S. stock index futures added 0.15%.

The price action is still being dictated by the U.S.-Israel war with Iran, which continues to rage even after conflicting comments from U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

Oil remained volatile as a result, falling to as low as $81 per barrel on Tuesday before bouncing back to $89 during the European session on Wednesday.

Derivatives positioning

Bitcoin's failure to build momentum above $70,000 has proved costly for bulls holding leveraged long bets. In the past 24 hours, over $220 million worth of crypto futures bets have been liquidated, with longs accounting for most of the tally.

Open interest (OI) in dollar-denominated bitcoin futures on major exchanges has declined to 226,000 $BTC from 233,000 $BTC. This indicates that the overnight price drop hasn't really seen traders short the falling market. The same dynamic is seen in solana (SOL) and ether ($ETH) futures.

Activity in XRP futures continues to grow, with open interest rising to 1.74 billion tokens, the highest since Feb. 23.

Broadly speaking, OI has decreased in most alternative tokens over the past 24 hours, a sign of renewed capital outflows.

TRX, CC and XMR stand out with a bullish combination of positive annualized funding rates and cumulative volume delta (CVD), pointing to active buying in the futures market. Most other coins have flat to negative funding rates and CVDs.

Aave users lose $26M after wstETH oracle misconfiguration triggers liquidations

A configuration incident in Aave’s oracle system triggered approximately $26 million worth of liquidations after the protocol briefly priced wstETH about 2.85% below its actual exchange rate.

The discrepancy caused some leveraged borrowers’ positions to appear undercollateralized, leading to automatic liquidations, according to a new report from Chaos Labs.

The problem came from a mismatch between the snapshot ratio and the snapshot timestamp, the two parameters in Aave’s CAPO oracle system.

The offchain system intended to update the snapshot ratio to reflect the exchange rate from seven days earlier, but an onchain constraint limited increases to 3% every three days. As a result, the ratio could only be partially updated while the timestamp still reflected the full seven-day adjustment.

This misalignment caused the CAPO formula to calculate a maximum exchange rate lower than the actual market rate, effectively pushing the oracle price down.

The event resulted in roughly 10,938 wstETH in liquidations across 34 accounts. Third-party liquidators captured approximately 499 $ETH in combined bonuses and profits, though the protocol itself did not accumulate bad debt.

To mitigate the situation, Aave temporarily reduced the borrow caps, corrected the oracle configuration, and restored the accurate exchange rate.

Since then, about 141 $ETH has been recovered through BuilderNet refunds, along with around 13 $ETH in liquidation fees, which will be used to help compensate affected users. The DAO treasury will cover any remaining shortfall.

As adoption of Bitcoin (BTC) and altcoins continues to grow, the latest news comes for Solana (SOL).

Accordingly, Solmate, which is traded on Nasdaq, announced that it will establish its Solana headquarters in the United Arab Emirates.

Solmate, currently operating under the name Brera Holdings PLC, announced it will change its name to Solmate Infrastructure PLC and transform into a digital asset infrastructure company based in Solana, making Abu Dhabi its main operational center.

Solmate (SLMT), a company traded on Nasdaq, will establish a Solana headquarters in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as part of a corporate restructuring.

Last September, Solmate announced it would be shifting away from its traditional business model focused on managing football clubs and adopting a strategy focused on Solana.

The company also plans to amend its articles of association to formally include blockchain infrastructure and digital asset treasury operations as core business lines.

This step is an extension of Solmate’s corporate transition, which began last September when it transformed from a football club owner to a Solana youth development provider.

The company added that the funds will now be used to expand Solana’s infrastructure and implement its digital asset strategy in the UAE.

The company also plans a 1:10 reverse stock split to adjust its equity structure. The plan would merge 10 Class A and 10 Class B shares into a single share, increasing its face value from $0.05 to $0.50. The stock ticker symbol will remain SLMT.
