Crypto funds add $1B as three-week inflow streak continues

Crypto investment products continued their momentum last week, signaling resilience to geopolitical stress and strengthening the case for Bitcoin’s role as a safe-haven asset.

Crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs) recorded $1.06 billion in inflows last week, led by $793 million into Bitcoin (BTC), CoinShares reported on Monday.

The inflows mark three consecutive weeks of positive flows totaling $2.7 billion, driving net inflows to around $1.2 billion year-to-date.

CoinShares’ head of research, James Butterfill, said the rising momentum over the past few weeks underscores the resilience of digital assets, particularly Bitcoin, as a “relative safe haven” compared with other asset classes.

Since the onset of the Iran crisis, total assets under management (AuM) in digital asset ETPs have risen by 9.4% to nearly $140 billion, he said.

Ethereum ETP flows about to turn neutral with fresh $315 million inflows

With the latest inflows, Bitcoin ETPs increased year-to-date gains to $933 million. Ether (ETH) funds are still in the red, with around $23 million in outflows YTD after $315.3 million of inflows last week.

Butterfill said the launch of new staking ETF listings in the US contributed to the positive momentum, bringing the flows close to a net neutral position.

Justices Alito, Thomas, and Kavanaugh dissented. Trump praised the three dissenters for their “Wisdom and Courage” while accusing Republican-appointed justices in the majority of going out of their way to prove their independence.

He also targeted Judge James Boasberg, alleging “extreme partisan bias” in cases involving the Federal Reserve and the Trump administration.

Hours after the original ruling, Trump pivoted to Section 122 of the Trade Act of 194, imposing temporary 10% global tariffs, later raised to 15%. Those tariffs expire after 150 days unless Congress extends them.

The leading cryptocurrency, Bitcoin ($BTC), started the new week with an increase. The $BTC price rose above $74,000 before giving back some of its gains and falling back to around $73,000.

Although Bitcoin has outperformed stocks or gold since the US-Iran conflict, it remains more than 40% below its peak last October.

Bitcoin is recovering at this point, but is still moving within a certain range. According to analysts, Bitcoin spent much of this year stuck between $60,000 and $75,000. It consistently signaled an upward breakout but was unable to achieve the major breakout.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Wintermute analyst Jasper De Maere stated that despite Bitcoin’s recent uptrends and efforts in that direction, the downward trend still prevails due to increasing open positions and negative funding rates.

The analyst also noted that trading volumes were lower compared to the end of last year, adding that this made Bitcoin vulnerable to price volatility.

“The market rises a bit, open positions increase, Bitcoin funding rates turn negative, then we get squeezed upwards.”

Similarly, Andreja Cobeljic, head of derivatives at Swiss-based cryptocurrency bank Amina, noted that the current situation with Bitcoin follows a pattern seen in previous cryptocurrency bear markets.

He predicted that $BTC lacked the necessary momentum for further gains and could experience another decline after a temporary relief rally.

Legendary BTC Trader Brandt Spots ‘Horn’ Pattern on Bitcoin Chart: ‘Banana Splitting’



Legendary commodity trader Peter L. Brandt has taken to his X account to share important recent analysis of Bitcoin's price moves, making a bullish prediction for the largest cryptocurrency on the market.

He referred to a classic book by Richard W. Schabacker published in 1934, saying that Bitcoin is currently playing out a pattern from it.

Bitcoin "banana splits" forming "horn" pattern

Peter Brandt published a Bitcoin chart, depicting the beginning of a recovery of digital gold and showing a “horn” pattern. Brandt’s caption to it is: “The banana is splitting.”

The “horn” formation, according to Brandt, goes back to W. Schabacker's 1934 book Technical Analysis and Stock Market Profits. Without going into technical details, this pattern signals instability in the asset’s current price trend and marks a breakout as imminent.

Hence, Brandt marked a likely surge in Bitcoin's price toward the $88,000-$90,000 levels.

Currently, Bitcoin is at $73,133 per coin after dropping below the $74,000 level earlier today.

Japan to Triple Prison Terms for Unregistered Crypto Sales

Japan’s Financial Services Agency will dramatically tighten penalties for unlicensed cryptocurrency sales, Nikkei reported on March 16. Maximum prison terms will more than triple, from 3 to 10 years, under the proposed revision.

The move marks Japan’s clearest signal yet that it will regulate crypto as a full-fledged financial product, not a payment tool.

Penalties Align With Securities-Grade Enforcement

Fines will also rise sharply, from ¥3 million ($20,000) to ¥10 million ($67,000), or to the combined penalty. The changes come as crypto oversight shifts from the Payment Services Act to the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act.

The migration places digital assets under the same legal framework governing stocks, bonds, and derivatives in Japan. Registered operators will be renamed from “crypto asset exchange providers” to “crypto asset trading firms.”

SESC Gets Criminal Investigation Powers

Enforcement is getting sharper teeth as well. Previously, the FSA could only issue warning letters to unregistered operators. The SESC was limited to seeking court injunctions against their business activities.

Under the new framework, the SESC will conduct criminal investigations into unlicensed crypto businesses. It will carry out on-site inspections, seize evidence, and refer cases for prosecution. These powers already exist for securities fraud and insider trading in traditional financial markets.

The expanded penalties will also cover unregistered operators of OTC crypto derivatives, not just spot trading.

Bitcoin’s $BTC$74,244.92 recent strength during geopolitical uncertainty reflects a fundamental shift in the asset’s ownership structure, according to Wall Street broker Bernstein.

The cryptocurrency climbed roughly 7% last week, with ether (ETH) gaining about 9%, outperforming gold and global equity indices as markets reacted to escalating global conflict. The broker said the performance highlights how institutional ownership is reshaping the market.

"We believe the combination of Strategy’s treasury model and ETFs have transformed bitcoin’s ownership structure," analysts led by Gautam Chhugani said in the Monday report.

Strategy, which the analysts described as acting like a “bitcoin central bank of last resort,” has continued buying through the downturn. The firm extended its streak of weekly purchases, acquiring about $1.57 billion worth of $BTC, according to a Monday filing.

The company, led by Executive Chairman Michael Saylor, bought 22,337 bitcoin at an average price of $70,194 each, bringing its total holdings to 761,068 $BTC acquired at an average cost of $75,696 per coin.

Strategy has also expanded its preferred equity financing strategy through the STRC product, which offers investors high-yield income linked to the Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) and has generated rising trading volumes. The additional liquidity helps fund more bitcoin purchases through at-the-market offerings.

Meanwhile, spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have attracted about $2.1 billion in inflows over the past three weeks, bringing ETF ownership to roughly 6.1% of total bitcoin supply. The analysts said these vehicles are increasingly drawing allocations from wealth managers, pension funds and sovereign investors.
