For years, crypto regulation in the United States has developed under overlapping authority between the SEC and the CFTC.

First, the SEC has classified many tokens as securities using the Howey Test.

In the meantime, the CFTC has treated core assets such as Bitcoin [BTC] and Ethereum [ETH] as commodities, particularly in derivatives markets.

As these interpretations expanded, regulatory boundaries became increasingly unclear. In practice, both agencies could scrutinize the same token or trading platform.

This overlap exposed crypto firms to parallel enforcement actions, increasing uncertainty across the industry, as they faced the risk of being penalized by multiple regulatory bodies for the same actions or practices.

A new controversy has emerged within the cryptocurrency community, particularly on “crypto Twitter,” involving US-based exchange Coinbase (COIN).

Rumors are circulating that the exchange is actively opposing the proposed Bitcoin (BTC) de minimis tax exemption, allegedly to promote a regulatory framework that favors stablecoins over Bitcoin.

Coinbase’s Alleged Lobbying
As the US government seeks to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for the crypto industry—especially following Donald Trump’s re-election campaign—tax exemptions have become a focal point in congressional discussions.

In a March 4 interview, Senator Cynthia Lummis mentioned that both the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee are contemplating a $300 exemption, which would allow crypto users to utilize Bitcoin for transactions without incurring capital gains taxes.

“We’re trying to figure out the appropriate criteria for distinguishing when a transaction—such as a sale of Bitcoin—should be subject to capital gains taxes and when it can be used as a straightforward medium of exchange, akin to the US dollar,” explained Lummis.

However, industry insights shared by Marty Bent, managing partner at Ten31, indicate that Coinbase may be lobbying against such exemptions. Bent claimed on social media that the exchange is attempting to “nuke” the Bitcoin exemption while seeking to support stablecoins exclusively.

Allegedly, Coinbase representatives have informed legislators that “No one is using Bitcoin as money. A de minimis exemption for Bitcoin is a handout that will be DOA [dead on arrival].”

Accordingly, Litecoin founder Charlie Lee claimed in a recent interview that anonymous creator Satoshi’s $BTC would be the first target of quantum attacks.

Lee stated that while Satoshi’s identity remains unknown, the more than one million $BTC he is believed to hold are most vulnerable to such attacks because they are not properly protected.

Lee added that if quantum computing becomes a reality, Satoshi’s Bitcoins would likely be among the first to be hacked.

Lee stated that Satoshi is estimated to own approximately 1.1 million $BTC, and that these $BTC are stored in P2PK addresses, which could make them more vulnerable to quantum attacks.

However, Lee added that current quantum computing technology is still significantly insufficient to break Bitcoin’s encryption.

Quantum computing company PsiQuantum has taken quantum concerns to another level with its latest move.

PsiQuantum has taken another step closer to its goal of building the world’s first usable quantum computer. The company announced that it has begun construction of a 1 million qubit quantum facility that scientists say is powerful enough to crack Bitcoin’s encryption.

The team behind TOKEN2049 has confirmed that TOKEN2049 Dubai 2026 will be postponed to 21–22 April 2027 due to ongoing regional uncertainty impacting safety, travel, and logistics.

The decision was made in coordination with partners and stakeholders to ensure the conference could be held safely and at the scale expected of a global crypto industry gathering.

Despite the delay, organizers reaffirmed their confidence in Dubai as a major hub for the digital asset ecosystem and thanked local regulators and government partners for their support. They said the event would return stronger in 2027.

All existing tickets will automatically transfer to the new 2027 dates. Attendees who prefer may instead move their tickets to TOKEN2049 Singapore, scheduled for 7–8 October 2026 at Marina Bay Sands.

TOKEN2049 is the premier annual gathering for the crypto and blockchain industry, connecting leaders, investors, and innovators to discuss emerging trends, regulatory developments, and technological breakthroughs.

Featuring keynote speeches, panels, hackathons, exhibitions, and hundreds of side events, the series fosters collaboration, knowledge sharing, and high-impact announcements across web3 and digital assets.

AI Pivot Won’t Save Everyone, Wintermute Tells Bitcoin Miners
Bitcoin miners are caught in the tightest squeeze of the network’s history, and a new Wintermute report argues that simply waiting for the next bull run is no longer a strategy. 

Instead, the firm says miners will have to reinvent themselves as infrastructure and treasury managers if they want to make it to the next halving.

Wintermute analyst Jasper De Maere says the current mining cycle is structurally different from prior ones in 2018 and 2022. Bitcoin’s design cuts block rewards in half every four years, but this time the price has not doubled over the same window, which means miner revenue is shrinking in real terms. 

On a rolling four‑year basis, Bitcoin has only returned about 1.15x in this epoch, far below the 10x–20x multiples seen in earlier cycles.

In past cycles, huge price gains covered up a lot of problems. Miners could count on bull markets to bail out weak margins after each halving. 

Today, with institutions, ETFs, and corporate treasuries in the mix, Bitcoin trades more like a mainstream macro asset, and those explosive 20x runs are less likely. 

For miners that built their business on the assumption of permanent hypergrowth, Wintermute frames this as a regime change, not a bad quarter.
