On March 11, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust pulled in $115.51 million in net inflows, accounting for nearly the entirety of the $115.42 million that flowed into US spot Bitcoin ETFs that day. Ethereum spot ETFs added $57 million separately.

The following morning, BlackRock did something it has not done with any previous crypto product. It launched a fund designed to pay investors while they wait.
The iShares Staked Ethereum Trust, trading under the ticker ETHB on Nasdaq, began trading on March 12. It is BlackRock's third crypto ETF and its first to incorporate staking.

Under normal market conditions, ETHB stakes between 70% and 95% of its ether holdings via Coinbase Prime. Investors receive approximately 82% of gross staking rewards, currently running at roughly 3.1% annually, distributed monthly. BlackRock and Coinbase retain 18% as a staking fee.

The fund charges a 0.25% sponsor fee, discounted to 0.12% for the first year on the first $2.5 billion in assets. It launched with just over $100 million in initial assets and recorded $15.5 million in first-day trading volume, which market watchers described as a solid debut for a new ETF.

On-chain data shows the shark and whale population on the Bitcoin network has surged to a new record, indicating continued influx of large entities.

According to data from on-chain analytics firm Santiment, there are currently a record number of Bitcoin investors holding over 100 tokens. The indicator cited by Santiment is the “Supply Distribution,” which tells us about the total amount of addresses that currently belong to a given wallet group.

Addresses are divided into these cohorts based on the number of coins that they are carrying in their balance. The 1 to 10 coins group, for example, includes all investors owning between 1 and 10 BTC. Now, here is the chart for the Bitcoin Supply Distribution shared by Santiment that shows the trend in its value for three ranges: 0 to 1, 1 to 100, and 100+ coins:

As shown in the graph above, the Bitcoin Supply Distribution has increased for the 100+ BTC and 0 to 1 BTC cohorts since mid-2024, indicating growth among both the largest and smallest investors. The 1 to 100 coins group, however, has shown the opposite trajectory in this window; addresses of this size have seen their population shrink.

At the current exchange rate, the bottom and top ends of the 1 to 100 coins cohort convert to $72,000 and $7.2 million, respectively. Given this size, the holders belonging to the group would be the mid-sized entities that carry more power than the retail traders, but are still not too relevant when compared to the largest holders. Today, there are 954,000 addresses falling inside this tier.

The reduction in the count of these investors could partly be a result of promotion/demotion to the other cohorts. Either way, the trend would suggest that the holder base has become more concentrated on the extreme top and bottom ends recently. Following the growth in the 100+ coins cohor

Metaplanet is widening its Bitcoin strategy beyond treasury accumulation, setting up two wholly owned subsidiaries aimed at building out the financial rails it believes Japan will need as institutional adoption of BTC deepens. The move pairs a domestic infrastructure push with a new cross-border capital markets platform, giving the Tokyo-listed company a broader claim on what it sees as Bitcoin’s next growth market.

Metaplanet Deepens Bitcoin Play
In a post on X early Thursday, CEO Simon Gerovich said the company’s board had approved the creation of Metaplanet Ventures and Metaplanet Asset Management. The first will focus on Japan’s domestic ecosystem. The second, based in Miami, is designed as a digital credit and Bitcoin capital markets business linking Asian and Western markets across “yield, equity, credit, and volatility strategies.”

The more immediate signal came from Metaplanet Ventures. Gerovich said the subsidiary will invest ¥4 billion over the next few years into firms building Bitcoin financial infrastructure in Japan, spanning “lending, payments, custody,stablecoins, derivatives, compliance.” He added that the company is also launching an incubator for early-stage founders and a grants program for open-source developers, educators and researchers.

Gerovich framed the bet as a wager that regulation is no longer Japan’s bottleneck. “Japan has built the best regulatory framework in the world for digital assets. Now it needs the companies, the builders, and the infrastructure to match. We want to help make that happen,” he wrote. That positioning matters. Rather than pitching the market as one still waiting for legal clarity, Metaplanet is arguing that the rules are already in place and the missing piece is execution at scale.

In a post on the social network X on March 13, Buterin decided it was time to “make clear the record” on his current relationship with the FLI, as well as the divergence (and similarities) of their approaches to AI risk.

The Facts
In 2021, Vitalik Buterin, who is known for his philanthropy focused on “high impact” causes, donated to the FLI part of the enormous gift of the SHIB token he received from Shiba Inu’s creators as a marketing stunt (that actually worked out) to promote the coin under the statement that “Vitalik owns half of our supply”. He explained that the FLI originally pitched him on a broad roadmap to reduce existential risks from AI, biology, nuclear threats and more, with a pro‐peace, pro‐science focus that convinced him to fund them, as it aligned with his own view of the path of real-world impact he believes the crypto sphere should be taking.
