Bitcoin outperforms stocks, tops $72,000 even as dollar strengthens
BTC climbed 2% to break through $72,000 while U.S. equity futures slipped and the dollar strengthened, as altcoins and AI tokens joined a broader crypto rally.

What to know:

BTC rose 2% since midnight UTC, climbing through $72,000 and outpacing Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 futures, even as the dollar index (DXY) climbed above 100.

A high-volume break above $74,000 could trigger a move toward $80,000, while rejection would likely keep BTC in the range seen since Feb. 5.

TRUMP jumped over 30% after a gala announcement for top holders, while AI tokens TAO and FET each gained about 14% amid broader market strength.

Bitcoin BTC$71,859.13 rose through $72,000 during European hours on Friday, rising by 2% since midnight UTC and outpacing gains in U.S. equity indexes.

Futures on the Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 index dropped during Asian trading hours before recovering. Both are now in the green. The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), meanwhile, broke above 100, a move that typically puts pressure on risk assets like cryptocurrencies and stocks.

Today, however, the crypto market seems relatively immune to that pressure, with notable gains across the board. The CoinDesk 20 Index (CD20) is 1.1% higher since midnight.

If bitcoin can break above $74,000, a level it has failed to penetrate recently, on convincing volume, it might trigger a breakout back to the $80,000 region. Otherwise, it is likely to revert to a trading range that dates back to Feb. 5.

The war in Iran continued to rage Friday morning, with fresh strikes being detected in Tehran and Dubai, keeping oil around $100 per barrel.

AI Pivot Won’t Save Everyone, Wintermute Tells Bitcoin Miners
Bitcoin miners are caught in the tightest squeeze of the network’s history, and a new Wintermute report argues that simply waiting for the next bull run is no longer a strategy. 

Instead, the firm says miners will have to reinvent themselves as infrastructure and treasury managers if they want to make it to the next halving.

Wintermute analyst Jasper De Maere says the current mining cycle is structurally different from prior ones in 2018 and 2022. Bitcoin’s design cuts block rewards in half every four years, but this time the price has not doubled over the same window, which means miner revenue is shrinking in real terms. 

On a rolling four‑year basis, Bitcoin has only returned about 1.15x in this epoch, far below the 10x–20x multiples seen in earlier cycles.

In past cycles, huge price gains covered up a lot of problems. Miners could count on bull markets to bail out weak margins after each halving. 

Today, with institutions, ETFs, and corporate treasuries in the mix, Bitcoin trades more like a mainstream macro asset, and those explosive 20x runs are less likely. 

For miners that built their business on the assumption of permanent hypergrowth, Wintermute frames this as a regime change, not a bad quarter.

Bitcoin $BTC$71,859.13 is adding to overnight gains in early U.S. trading on Friday, continuing to show strong relative price action after many months of underperformance to assets like stocks and precious metals.

Trading at $73,800, bitcoin is higher by nearly 5% over the past 24 hours, with most of those gains coming after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday evening said the Trump administration is taking concrete steps to try and cap surging oil prices.

Bitcoin is now higher by about 11% since the Iran war broke out, outperforming broad U.S. stock indices and gold, both of which have lost ground since the bombs began dropping about two weeks ago.

WTI oil on Friday is trading at $94.50 per barrel, down from a high of nearly $98 on Thursday. U.S. stocks are posting gains of about 0.5%.

Oil raises stagflationary risk

The recent spike in oil prices is putting direct pressure on household budgets and, if sustained, could weaken consumer spending and slow economic growth, according to Olu Sonola, head of US economics at Fitch Ratings.

"Yes, the broader economy is still expected to grow at trend, but that forecast increasingly looks fragile as downside risks accumulate. ... The Fed can shrug off pockets of weakening growth, but resurgent inflation severely limits its room to maneuver, leaving policy potentially stranded for months," he wrote in a note.

Relief bounce

After a period of some of the worst sentiment in bitcoin's history, it's perhaps not too surprising that there's been some modest gains of late.

Funding positioning of perpetual futures traders has been negative for the longest period since late 2022, K33 Research analyst Vetle Lunde noted. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Division of Market Oversight issued an advisory on prediction markets, reminding exchanges of their regulatory obligations as event contracts grow rapidly across trading platforms.

The guidance outlines requirements under the Commodity Exchange Act for designated contract markets listing event contracts, including product submission rules and core market integrity principles. The division said the advisory aims to support innovation while ensuring exchanges comply with existing regulations.

The notice also highlights considerations around sports-related event contracts, one of the fastest-growing areas of prediction market trading.

The advisory comes as the regulatory tone toward prediction markets has shifted. The previous administration sought to limit expansion of event contracts into new categories, but current CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig has taken a more permissive approach since taking office in December.

Platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket have helped drive the rapid expansion of prediction markets highlighted in the CFTC’s advisory. That growth accelerated after a court ruling in 2024 cleared the way for contracts tied to the US presidential election. Crypto.com soon launched sports prediction markets, with Kalshi later introducing similar offerings.

Polymarket, which previously operated an offshore platform offering sports trading, recently obtained licenses to launch a regulated US exchange focused on sports markets.

The sector has also attracted political connections, as Donald Trump Jr. serves as an adviser to Kalshi and Polymarket, while Trump Media and Technology Group is developing a prediction market product in partnership with Crypto.com.

While the increase in stablecoin usage in the cryptocurrency market is noteworthy, stablecoin transaction volume on the Solana network reached a record high in February. According to data shared by the crypto data and analytics platform Unfolded, Solana-based stablecoin transaction volume reached a total of $650 billion in February, hitting an all-time high.

Analysts say the growth in stablecoin transaction volume indicates a growing adoption of blockchain-based financial systems. The record transaction volume on the Solana network is considered one of the strongest examples of this trend.
