Crypto Fear and Greed Index falls back down to 'extreme fear' levels

The Crypto Fear and Greed Index, one of the most widely used gauges of crypto investor sentiment, has fallen back down to “extreme fear” levels after briefly recovering on Wednesday.

The Crypto Fear and Greed Index is at 18 at the time of this writing, down from the 20 recorded on Friday, according to CoinMarketCap. 20 signals “fear,” an atmosphere of caution among investors, but an improvement over rock-bottom market sentiment.

Sentiment briefly spiked to 25 on Wednesday, but contracted as geopolitical tensions between the US, Israel and Iran continue to erode risk appetite and increase macroeconomic uncertainty among market participants.

The index hit a yearly low of 5 in February amid the crypto market downturn and several headwinds, including renewed geopolitical tensions and macroeconomic concerns, such as uncertainty over interest rate policy, liquidity levels and rising US government debt.

Crypto assets have been in a bear market since the October 2025 crash, which slashed the price of Bitcoin ($BTC) by over 50% from its all-time high, before $BTC staged a limited recovery, and erased hundreds of billions of dollars in value from the altcoin market.

Dubai’s regulator warns MEXC, KuCoin to cease ‘unlicensed’ crypto activity

There has been heightened scrutiny of regional crypto exchanges for allegedly helping Iran bypass U.S sanctions.
Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) has ordered crypto exchanges MEXC, KuCoin, and their affiliates to immediately cease all “unlicensed” activity in the region. 

In a public statement, the regulator said that MEXC affiliates do not hold a VARA license. It also warned investors that engaging with the exchange exposes them to financial risk and legal consequences. 

Interestingly, the Friday warning against MEXC followed a similar move against KuCoin. On Thursday, the agency issued

a stern warning to KuCoin and its users in the region. 

“VARA advises consumers and investors in Dubai to avoid engaging with Kucoin or the purpose of Virtual Asset services, and to exercise caution when considering interactions with unregulated entities.”

Several cycle indicators are now compressing simultaneously as post-peak fragility continues to ripple through the ecosystem. Within this environment, Entity-Adjusted NUPL has declined towards roughly 0.2, pushing sentiment into the historical fear zone. Previously in the cycle, the metric hovered near 0.6 while Bitcoin traded close to $110,000. Since then, however, persistent selling pressure has compressed unrealized profits across the network. At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at around $68,000-$69,000. At the same time, the price was sitting roughly 20-25% below the estimated average miner production cost of $89,000-$91,000.
