Kazakhstan’s central bank will soon begin investing up to $350 million from its gold and foreign exchange reserves into cryptocurrency assets and related companies, as part of its broader digital assets strategy.

On Friday, Reuters reported that the National Bank of Kazakhstan (NBK) has formed a portfolio of up to $350 million from its gold and foreign exchange reserves ‌for investment in digital assets.

As of February 1, Kazakhstan’s central bank held $69.40 billion in gold and foreign exchange reserves, while the assets of the national fund amounted to $65.23 billion, the news media outlet noted.

At a briefing on interest rates, the central bank governor, Timur Suleimanov, affirmed that the financial authority is developing a list of instruments to invest in, which will include crypto-related companies.

“These include shares of high-tech companies related to cryptocurrencies and digital financial assets, index funds and other instruments that exhibit similar dynamics to crypto assets,” Suleimanov explained.

Meanwhile, Central Bank Deputy Chair Aliya Moldabekova shared that the investments will begin between April and May. She added that there are no plans to make any large investments directly in digital assets, but in companies that deal with them.

“We are not talking about any large investment in cryptocurrencies. We are currently selecting companies that deal with digital assets. For example, those ⁠involved in cryptocurrency infrastructure. We are currently in the process of selecting such companies,” Moldabekova said.

The central bank’s initiative follows Kazakhstan’s plan to establish a national digital asset reserve fund valued between $500 million and $1 billion, primarily comprised of assets seized and repatriated from abroad.

The political and economic climate in the US drives most of these movements. When the Federal Reserve hints at rate changes or shows concerns about economic growth, certain stocks can react faster, while Bitcoin may see inflows driven more by anticipation of a “digital gold” narrative, thus reducing the close equity-like correlation.

However, the relationship between Bitcoin and the US Dollar Index (DXY) has shown an increased correlation. Until August 2024, the two still moved largely in opposite directions, as is often the case when a strong dollar can pressure speculative assets.

By September 2024, the correlation became positive, showing that Bitcoin was no longer purely inversely tied to the dollar's moves. While the correlation between BTC and DXY has been decreasing at a much slower pace than its correlation with Nasdaq and the S&P 500, it still represents a significant shift from the trend established in 2024.

When Bitcoin no longer moves in lockstep with equities, even subtle changes in the dollar's behavior can look less influential than before. However, the bill carries a vehicle attachment by Senator Tim Scott and Senator Elizabeth Warren that proposes a sunset provision that enforces a CBDC ban until December 31, 2030.

At 09:30 EST the tape changed in a way traders can feel in their stomach, the kind of flip where you stop looking for clever explanations and start checking how much margin you actually have.

Bitcoin rolled over, then it dropped, then it started moving in chunks. On one screen, the S&P 500 e-mini was sliding, the dollar was firming, oil was ripping higher, and the so called safety metals were getting hit at the same time. A lot of people only needed a few candles to realise this was going to be one of those afternoons where the market sells first and explains itself later.

By 11:00 EST, Bitcoin was trading around $84,434 after hitting an intraday low of $84,365, down roughly 5.4% on the day.

On TradingView, the picture looked brutal in one glance, oil up about 3%, the dollar index up about 0.3%, S&P futures down around 1.1%, Bitcoin off about 4.7%, gold down close to 5.8%, silver down more than 6%. Everything that usually tells a neat story was talking over itself.
