defensive positioning.

About 38% of altcoins are trading at or near their all-time lows, according to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost. That figure now exceeds the 37.8% reading recorded in the immediate aftermath of the FTX collapse. It also surpasses the 35% level measured in April 2025. Darkfost described the current environment as "unfavorable" for risk-on assets.

The analyst said crypto markets are among the first to absorb pressure when investors shift toward defensive positioning. Liquidity is moving out of altcoins and into equities and commodities, he said. Darkfost called the current drawdown the largest regression recorded during this market cycle.

Trading volume data reflects the shift. Daily volume peaked at over $417 billion on Oct. 10, the date of the historic crypto market crash, according to CoinMarketCap. By February and March 2026, daily volumes had dropped to a range of $49.4 billion to $268 billion.

The Total3 metric, which tracks the combined market capitalization of all crypto assets excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum, has retraced to November 2024 levels. POLKADOT hit an all-time low of $1.13 in February before recovering 33%.
