Litecoin Founder Warns Satoshi’s Bitcoins May Be First Target of Quantum Attacks



Litecoin (LTC) founder Charlie Lee warns that Satoshi Nakamoto’s estimated 1.1 million Bitcoins ($BTC) are vulnerable to quantum-computing attacks.

The warning raises an uncomfortable governance dilemma for Bitcoin’s decentralized community. If Satoshi is no longer alive or accessible, no one can migrate those coins to safety, and freezing them would mean compromising Bitcoin’s foundational principles.

Why Satoshi’s Bitcoins Are “Less Safe”

In an interview with BeInCrypto, Lee explained that while quantum computing could, in theory, crack current encryption methods, the technology hasn’t yet reached that level in practice. Still, he emphasized that the threat extends far beyond cryptocurrency, potentially undermining the security infrastructure of global finance, communications, and more.

For crypto specifically, the stakes are high. If quantum computers were to break wallet encryption, anyone could access and spend someone else’s funds, effectively destroying the foundation of the entire crypto ecosystem. However, not all wallets face the same risk.

“The million Bitcoins that Satoshi has. Nobody knows who Satoshi is….Those coins are not well protected. They’re actually less safe than current coins in terms of quantum attacks,” Lee told BeInCrypto. “If quantum does happen, those will be the first coins that will be kind of broken into.”

U.S. sanctions 6 people, 2 companies that laundered $800 million in crypto for North Korea



The U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on six individuals and two companies it says helped North Korea convert $800 million in 2024 into crypto to launder the money and fund its weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs.

The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said Thursday that the operation placed IT workers into foreign companies and channeled their earnings back to Pyongyang. The network operated across multiple countries including Vietnam, Laos and Spain, according to the Treasury.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has for years targeted cryptocurrency protocols and networks to steal and launder funds. Last year, hackers linked to the country stole a record $2 billion of crypto, according to the blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis.

The sanctioned network relied on a mix of crypto infrastructure, including centralized exchanges, hosted wallets, decentralized finance (DeFi) services and cross-chain bridges, to facilitate movement of the funds, Chainalysis said in a post on its website.

OFAC’s designation included 21 crypto wallet addresses across several blockchains including Ethereum, Tron and Bitcoin, reflecting what the Chainalysis researchers described as the DPRK’s increasingly multichain approach to moving and obscuring illicit funds.

“The North Korean regime targets American companies through deceptive schemes carried out by its overseas IT operatives, who weaponize sensitive data and extort businesses for substantial payments,” Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said in the statement.

The person doing this business is Alex Atallah. His company recently received $40 million in funding led by a16z, and is now valued at $500 million.


What you might not know is that his previous company was OpenSea, the world's largest NFT exchange, which at its peak was valued at over $13 billion.

However, he chose to leave at the height of the NFT craze, and a few months later, the NFT market collapsed.  Now, he's made money again in the AI ​​boom.

From Liquidity Aggregation to Large Model Aggregation

Stronger dollar, rising Treasury yields, and tech equities treading water contrast with bitcoin’s resilience amid geopolitical tensions.

The U.S. Dollar Index has broken above 100 for the first time since late November.

At the same time, the Nasdaq 100 proxy, the Invesco QQQ Trust, is down about 0.5% and oil prices remain near $100 per barrel, conditions that typically weigh on risk assets.

Strategy (MSTR), the largest publicly traded corporate holder of bitcoin, is up more than 1 percent after acquiring roughly 11,000 BTC using proceeds from its perpetual preferred security Stretch (STRC).

Bitcoin BTC$71,859.13 rose above $71,500 on Friday, outperforming U.S. equities even as the dollar strengthened and oil prices remained elevated as the war with Iran was set to enter its third week.

A stronger dollar can tighten global financial conditions and often weighs on risk assets such as equities and cryptocurrencies. Higher oil prices — both Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate are hovering around $100 per barrel — reinforce inflation concerns and heighten expectations of interest-rate increases. Higher rates also detract from the attraction of such investments.
Despite these macro and geopolitical pressures, including the Middle East conflict, bitcoin has remained resilient and is among the best-performing macro assets since the war began on March 1. Historically, Fridays during this period have seen the largest cryptocurrency fall some 3%, a pattern that has not repeated so far today.

Bitcoin miner MARA has transferred 298 BTC to Cumberland, a move that could be linked to the company’s new stance on BTC sales.

According to on-chain analytics firm CryptoQuant, mining firm MARA has just made a transfer out of its Bitcoin wallets. The transaction has occurred just nine days after the company said in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it expanded its digital asset management strategy to allow for sales from BTC held on its balance sheet.

Historically, the miner has held onto the BTC that it has mined and purchased additional tokens for its treasury. Last year, however, it changed its strategy to permit sales of tokens generated via its mining operations. The expansion from earlier this month further built on this policy.

Considering that the miner is open to selling Bitcoin now, the latest outflow transaction from its reserve could be significant.

As displayed in the above graph, this transaction involved around 298 BTC (worth $21 million right now). According to CryptoQuant, the move was to Cumberland, a digital asset liquidity platform aimed at institutional entities.

MARA’s change of stance has come while the firm has been making a push into the AI datacenter space and amid a bearish downturn in the cryptocurrency sector. Bitcoin mining is an energy-intensive process, so all miners have to pay a constant running cost in the form of electricity bills. Whether miners can net a profit on their operations depends on the value of the tokens that they are mining, which tends to go down during bearish market phases.

Based on MARA filings, CryptoQuant has estimated the average BTC mining cost.
