Lekker Capital CIO Quinn Thompson argues on X that collapsing mining economics, combined with a growing shift by public miners toward AI and high-performance compute, could turn corporate $BTC treasuries into a fresh source of market supply.

“A large underappreciated headwind for Bitcoin is the disaster that which is mining economics. The only way this heals is through a decline in hashrate, which is being spearheaded by the AI compute first movers like CORZ, WULF, CIFR, IREN, etc.,” Thompson wrote.

The chart Thompson shared, frames the problem visually. It shows aggregate bitcoin holdings across major listed miners climbing sharply through 2024 and 2025 before rolling over in 2026. Thompson’s argument is not that the AI pivot is bearish in structural terms.

On the contrary, lower hashrate and less uneconomic competition could improve mining industry health over time. His point is that the transition itself is expensive, and that capex-heavy AI buildouts may force miners to liquidate $BTC that had previously been treated as strategic treasury.

“While helpful to long-term health and sustainability of the network economics, it presents a dilemma for prices in the near-term as Bitcoin miners hold almost 80,000 Bitcoin on their balance sheets. As these companies pivot away from $BTC mining, they 1) need capital to fund the AI buildout capex requirements and 2) have no reason to hold any $BTC on their balance sheet (not that they should have before either),” he argued.

On Friday, Bloomberg reported that HSBC, Hong Kong’s largest bank by assets, and a joint venture led by Standard Chartered are set to be among the first companies to receive the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s (HKMA) stablecoin licenses this month.

Authorities are reportedly prioritizing institutions already authorized to issue banknotes and will approve the two banks in the first batch, according to people familiar with the matter. Notably, the HKMA favors bank-led stablecoin issuers due to their robust capital base and ability to ensure greater safety while facilitating wider adoption, the sources affirmed.

Last month, the financial authority’s Chief Executive, Eddie Yue, announced it would grant the first, limited batch of stablecoin provider licenses in March as the review of 36 applications was nearly completed.

The HKMA enacted the Stablecoins Ordinance last August, which directs any individual or entity seeking to issue any fiat-referenced stablecoin (FRS) in Hong Kong, or any Hong Kong Dollar (HKD)-denominated token, to obtain a license from the financial regulator.

The number of licenses and the timetable had not yet been finalized and were subject to change. However, sources suggested March 24 as a possible date, as revealed by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), which first broke the news.

Industry sources suggested that Hong Kong’s licensing regime will initially prioritize the local currency. Standard Chartered has already announced plans to issue a Hong Kong dollar-pegged token.

Crypto analyst Colin Talks Crypto provided a technical analysis of Bitcoin’s recent price movements. The analyst noted that Bitcoin rose to the $74,000 level, but was rejected twice from that point, yet continued to form higher lows.

According to Colin Talks Crypto, the $74,500 level is a critical technical threshold. The analyst stated that this level is the same as the low seen in April 2025 and has acted as resistance twice recently. He added that if Bitcoin breaks above this level, it could signal a strong bullish move for the market.

The analyst stated that the current price movement does not yet show a clear direction, and it is not certain whether this is a “bear flag” pattern, meaning a continuation of the downtrend, or a harbinger of an upward breakout. However, he noted that Bitcoin making higher lows and the price pushing the upper limits of the range more than the lower limits creates a positive technical outlook.

Colin Talks Crypto predicted that if the price breaks above the current channel, Bitcoin’s next target could be between $79,000 and $86,000.

The bounce is not just price action noise. The 20-period and 50-period EMAs crossed bullish on the 8-hour chart, the same setup that triggered a 12% rally when it appeared around March 4.

Since the EMAs began converging this time, SOL has already gained 7.45%, suggesting buyers reacted to the signal fast.

The Smart Money Index, which tracks the behavior of experienced market participants, moved higher and widened from its signal line, pointing to stronger hands stepping in.

Short-term holders, the most speculative cohort, dropped their share of circulating supply from around 9% on March 7 to roughly 7.31% by March 12, meaning the flippers are leaving and the conviction buyers are staying.

Most notably, mid-to-long-term holders accumulated roughly 396,520 SOL on March 10. By March 12, that number had jumped to 819,634 SOL, a more than 100% increase in accumulation in 48 hours.

But the picture is not clean on all fronts. While price has trended higher since March 1, the Smart Money Index has actually trended lower over the same period, forming a bearish divergence that historically precedes slowdowns or reversals.
