Riot Case Reveals the Three-Layer Profit and Loss Structure of US Miners

Bitcoin mining costs are often simplified to a single number: "the cost of mining one BTC." In reality, this number depends on at which level you measure the business.

Electricity costs determine whether to start mining today, operating expenses determine whether the mining farm can support the entire company, and accounting costs determine whether the business ultimately reports a profit.

 To more clearly analyze these three levels, CryptoSlate constructed a Bitcoin mining cost model, starting from fundamental principles and calculating mining economics based on network difficulty, block rewards, transaction fees, ASIC energy efficiency, and electricity prices.

The model then incorporates company-level cost data from Riot Platforms' publicly available financial documents to demonstrate the actual economic situation.

Under current network conditions, the model shows that miners can cover electricity costs, but still cannot cover broader operating and accounting expenses.

Sweden probes reported leak of e-government platform source code

A threat actor has claimed to have leaked source code and other sensitive material tied to Sweden’s e-government platform, prompting an investigation by Swedish authorities and an incident response by CGI Sverige.

Cybersecurity accounts on X and local media reported Thursday that a threat actor calling itself ByteToBreach had published material it said came from CGI Sverige, the Swedish subsidiary of global IT giant CGI Group, and Sweden’s e-government infrastructure, according to local news outlet Aftonbladet.

CGI told Aftonbladet its cybersecurity team discovered an incident involving two internal test servers in Sweden that were not used in production. The company said an older application version and its source code were accessible, but that there was no indication that customer production data or operational services were affected. CGI press secretary Agneta Hansson confirmed to the news outlet that authorities are investigating the leak.

About 95% of Sweden’s 10.7 million population used e-government services in 2024, according to Eurostat data.

The leaked files could include the platform’s source code and configuration files, internal staff database, citizens’ personally identifiable information databases, electronic signing documents and other sensitive data.

According to Polymarket bettors, Ethereum (ETH) could be on the verge of losing its long-held status as the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.

The latest data shows a 57% probability that the flagship will be "flipped" and lose its number two ranking by the end of the year.

Just two months ago, in January, for comparison, the odds of Ethereum losing its spot sat at a mere 14%.

Currently, the stablecoin giant Tether ($USDT) is the undisputed main candidate poised to overtake the smart contract platform.

Ethereum's number two spot

Ethereum has never successfully surpassed Bitcoin, but it came remarkably close during the ICO boom of 2017. In June 2017, Ethereum's market capitalization surged to represent approximately 30% of the entire cryptocurrency market, while Bitcoin's dominance briefly plummeted below 40%. At its peak, Ethereum's total value hovered around 80% to 83% of Bitcoin's, sparking immense "flippening" hype that ultimately faded.

Ethereum has maintained a near-ironclad grip on the second-largest market capitalization for most of its existence since launching in 2015. However, it has faced some challenges.

It has actually slipped below second place on a few rare occasions. During the massive altcoin volatility of 2018, $XRP, the Ripple-affiliated token, briefly overtook Ethereum in market capitalization multiple times.

$XRP first pushed Ethereum down to third place in early January 2018, and then repeated the feat later that year.

The looming $USDT threat

The current threat comes from the mushrooming growth of the Tether ($USDT) cryptocurrency.

Raoul Pal Tells Why The Next 2 Weeks Are Extremely Crucial For The Crypto Market
Macro investor Raoul Pal says the next two weeks could prove decisive for the cryptocurrency market, arguing that widespread pessimism among traders may be overlooking powerful macroeconomic forces building in the background.

In a recent market outlook, Pal said global liquidity remains the dominant macro driver of digital assets, citing 90% correlation with Bitcoin and 97% with the Nasdaq‑100 Index since 2012.

The investor noted that global liquidity continues expanding at roughly 10% annually and shows little sign of slowing. According to Pal, the Global Macro Investor financial conditions index leads liquidity by about six months and is still easing.

Raoul Pal added that a recent “air pocket” in U.S. total liquidity, created when government funding flows were temporarily curtailed, appears to have bottomed three months ago and is accelerating again. Since this measure tends to lead crypto markets by about three months, the rebound could soon filter into digital asset prices.

Pal also pointed to an accelerating business cycle, rising bank liquidity through the enhanced supplementary leverage ratio mechanism, incoming U.S. tax refunds that expand bank balance sheets, and China’s expanding balance sheet as additional sources of liquidity. Expected U.S. rate cuts may also increase disposable income and risk-taking.

Furthermore, Pal said the proposed CLARITY Act may unlock participation from banks and asset managers seeking regulatory certainty. Stablecoin issuance, which expanded roughly 50% last year, is growing rapidly, with transaction volumes already reaching trillions of dollars.
