SocksEscort was the infrastructure layer cybercriminals used to stay invisible. Account takeovers, ransomware attacks, crypto fraud. All of it ran through this network to mask where the attacks were actually coming from.

It took over a decade. But the operation is done.

What the DOJ-Europol Takedown Actually Targeted

The network had hijacked 369,000 devices across 163 countries. Routers, IoT devices, residential IPs. All were infected with AVRecon malware and rented out to criminals who needed clean addresses to bypass fraud detection at banks and crypto exchanges.

20,000 new devices are infected every week since early 2024. Total revenue is estimated at $5.8 million over the life of the operation. One victim in New York lost roughly $1 million in crypto alone after their account was hit through a SocksEscort proxy.8 countries were involved in Operation Lightning. France, Germany, and the Netherlands, among them. The coordination was deliberate. Authorities are no longer just chasing individual criminals. They are targeting the infrastructure that makes crypto crime possible in the first place.

Europol's executive director put it plainly. Proxy services like SocksEscort are the anonymity shield that lets illicit funds move across borders undetected. Remove the shield, and the whole operation falls apart.

According to reports, the first approvals could be granted within the next few weeks.

Hong Kong regulators plan to issue only a small number of licenses in the initial round. Authorities reportedly reviewed dozens of applications before selecting potential issuers. Sources say around 36 companies initially expressed interest in applying for stablecoin licenses. HSBC’s potential approval is particularly notable because the bank did not participate in the HKMA’s earlier stablecoin sandbox program, which was designed to test projects before formal licensing.

The licensing process shows that Hong Kong wants to attract crypto businesses while still keeping strict rules. The government wants to protect investors while also encouraging new ideas. More and more, traditional banks are looking into blockchain-based payment systems to speed up international payments.

A Singapore court has ruled to sentence a man to two years in jail for involvement in a crypto theft that led to the loss of assets estimated at over $6.9 million.

The case initiated with an incident in which hackers had unauthorised access to a crypto wallet and transferred digital assets out of it without the consent of the owner. The officials mentioned that the claimant was part of a group that aided in easing the crypto theft after the compromised account was accessed via computer system.

Investigations noted that the operation included various individuals who exploited access to a platform linked to a global cryptocurrency exchange. Once the account was violated, cryptocurrencies worth around US$6.9 million, equal to around $8.8 million, were transferred out of the wallet.

Part of Stolen Funds Got Recovered

The Cybercrime Command of Singapore introduced an investigation after getting a report regarding various instances of unauthorised access to the wallet. After some time, officers recognised suspects associated with the incident and carried out arrests within days of the complaint being filed.
