On September 15, CNBC reported that Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic chief of the Senate Banking Committee, will deliver a speech on Monday evening opposing the CLARITY Act, a bill concerning the structure of the cryptocurrency market. The Senate is scheduled to hold a crucial procedural vote on Tuesday afternoon, requiring at least 60 votes for the bill to advance.
Republican leaders released an updated text on Sunday evening that included ethical provisions demanded by Democrats, which aim to prohibit the U.S. President and other senior government officials from issuing digital assets and allow state attorneys general to enforce related regulations. Warren referred to these provisions as a 'weak fig leaf,' arguing that they do not prevent Trump from continuing to profit from cryptocurrency ventures.
Warren believes the new provisions may allow officials appointed by Trump to halt enforcement and contain loopholes that enable him to continue profiting from businesses like World Liberty Financial. She also plans to seek unanimous consent in the Senate to pass the 'Terminate Presidential Banking Corruption Act,' which would restrict the President, Vice President, and related officials and their families from obtaining banking licenses, and revoke any such licenses granted since January 20, 2025. This proposal is expected to face challenges in gaining support from the Republican-controlled Senate.
