On September 15, Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev announced that the company plans to add physical redemption and voting rights for its stock tokens. Johann Kerbrat, head of Robinhood's crypto business, further stated that the company is developing a 1:1 exchange feature between tokens and the underlying stocks and intends to offer voting rights to eligible stock token holders, although a specific launch date has not yet been disclosed. This announcement comes after AMC CEO Adam Aron requested that Robinhood cease the issuance of AMC stock tokens. Aron believes that such tokens are issued without the approval of the issuing company and that holders do not possess the rights typically granted to traditional shareholders. Currently, Robinhood's stock tokens are issued to users outside the U.S. through a subsidiary registered in Jersey and are designed as debt instruments. Although Robinhood claims that the tokens are backed 1:1 by real shares held in custody, holders currently only gain exposure to the price of the underlying stocks without owning the shares or their associated benefits. The company may utilize its shareholder engagement platform, Say, to provide voting infrastructure.
